GAME RECAP

Kevin Willis scored 20 points in place of Charles Barkley and Clyde Drexler added 17 as the Houston Rockets defeated the new-look Cleveland Cavaliers, 94-86, in the season opener for both teams.

Willis made 10-of-12 shots from the field and grabbed eight rebounds as the Rockets defeated the shorthanded Cavaliers for the eighth time in the last nine meetings.

"That's a pretty good percentage, I guess," Willis said. "Shooting like that makes me feel pretty good about myself but the thing is to get the win. It's not like I've never started before. I play hard whether I'm off the bench or I'm starting. It's a good feeling to start but helping the team win is most important."

"We've seen it many times before," said Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "Kevin was very consistent this preseason and he played with a lot of energy tonight. The guy was phenomenal."

Barkley, who allegedly threw a bar patron through a window in Orlando earlier this week and met with NBA officials this morning in New York, had six points and eight rebounds in 22 minutes.

The All-Star forward threatened to retire if the league did not support him. He had a 90-minute meeting with NBA vice president of security Horace Balmer and deputy commissioner Russ Granik to discuss the incident and his future in the league.

"I flew four hours to New York last night, got in about midnight," Barkley said. "I stayed out 'til 5:00 and was at the NBA offices at 8:00 and then I flew back here. It was the first time I touched a ball since Sunday and I was glad to be out there. It felt good out there and I'm glad we got the win. It's a long season, we have 81 more games after this."

Rookie Brevin Knight scored 18 points and Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 16 and 16 rebounds in his NBA debut for the Cavaliers, who are going to an up-tempo offense after using a slowdown style and leading the NBA in defense that last two seasons. Ilgauskas missed his entire rookie season with a broken foot.

"I thought that I played well but not well enough because we didn't win," Knight said. "We made a couple of mistakes but for a lot of us it's still new. We're learning as we go."

Bob Sura added 11 points for Cleveland, which shot just 37 percent (32-of-86) from the field and missed all 13 of its three-point attempts.

All-Star forward Shawn Kemp, acquired from Seattle in a three-team deal, served his one-game suspension for leaving the bench in a preseason game on October 12th. Vitaly Potapenko, Cleveland's first-round pick last season, and forward Henry James also served suspensions for the same reason.

The Rockets controlled the game from the outset, taking the lead for good, 7-6, on a free throw by Drexler with 7:57 left in the opening quarter. Brent Price, who had eight points off the bench, capped an 11-0 surge with a pair of free throws to give the Rockets a 24-11 lead with 1:13 left in the period.

Houston held a 46-35 lead at halftime and Drexler's driving layup capped a 13-2 burst and gave the Rockets their biggest lead of the game, 69-48, with two minutes left in the third quarter.

"This is a good start despite the off-the-court distractions we had this week," Drexler said. "Basketball is the issue. It felt good to win out there tonight."

Knight had 10 points as the Cavaliers outscored the Rockets 16-7 to start the fourth quarter. Ilgauskas made a pair of free throws to pull Cleveland within 79-71 with 6:21 to go. But the Cavs came no closer as Price answered with a layup.

"It seemed like any time we made a little run, the Rockets would make a big shot," said Cleveland coach Mike Fratello. "We missed some free throws early and we had some crucial turnovers. But the most obvious problem is still shooting the basketball."
