GAME RECAP

Chuck Daly took a loss in his return to coaching as the Orlando Magic were beaten 105-99 in their season opener by the Atlanta Hawks, who used a late surge and received 20 points from Alan Henderson.

Daly, who coached the Detroit Pistons to consecutive NBA titles in 1989 and 1990 and guided the Dream Team in the 1992 Olympics, watched his team fall behind by 15 points in the first half and rally to tie the game with just over four minutes to go before going cold down the stretch.

After three years as a broadcaster, the 67-year-old Daly signed a three-year, $15 million deal to coach the Magic last June. His career record, compiled with Cleveland, Detroit and New Jersey, fell to 564-380.

"It was an interesting night, playing against a team who really executed," Daly said. "A pretty wild night, really. All the extravaganza before the game, pretty wild. I wish we would have been able to deliver a win."

Sidelined for much of his rookie season with a pancreatic disorder, Henderson scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, including four in a decisive 12-2 burst down the stretch that broke open a tie game. He had been nursing a knee sprain.

"I wasn't even sure I was going to play tonight, the way my knee had been feeling," Henderson said. "I had a little sprain and I said some prayers today. I think it got touched today."

Steve Smith scored 22 points and Tyrone Corbin added 15 for the Hawks, who won their season opener for the first time since 1993. Mookie Blaylock had 14 points and 13 assists and Dikembe Mutombo had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

"We played together well and shared the ball well," Smith said. "It's just another year of jelling together."

"Steve's going to have a great season," said Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens. "He plays hard. He's smart. He worked hard on defense, as you saw. Steve contributed in a lot of ways."

Atlanta shot 56 percent (40-of-72) from the field and held a 43-29 rebounding edge.

Shifted from point to shooting guard by Daly, Penny Hardaway had 31 points and eight rebounds. Rony Seikaly added 28 and 11 for the Magic, who shot 47 percent (37-of-78).

"I'm going to have to score 25-30 points a night for us to have a chance," said Hardaway, who played 40 minutes. "But we're still a little bit out of rhythm offensively."

"I played Penny too many minutes," Daly said. "But Penny wanted to play a lot of minutes."

Orlando trailed by as many as 15 points in the second quarter but tied it 86-86 with 5:05 left on a basket by Derek Harper. Henderson dunked and Seikaly scored before Atlanta took control.

Blaylock made a jumper, Henderson scored and Smith had a basket to give the Hawks a 94-88 lead with 2:27 to play. Hardaway had a hoop 14 seconds later, but Corbin scored, Henderson sank two free throws and Mutombo scored inside to seal it at 100-88 with 1:14 left.

"We had our chances over the last three or four minutes to come up with some big shots," Daly said. "We could never capture the lead."

Smith scored 10 points and Corbin eight in the first quarter, when Atlanta shot 68 percent (13-of-19) and opened a 30-18 lead. Orlando, which shot 30 percent (6-of-20) in the opening period, fell behind 43-28 on a three-pointer by Hawks rookie guard Ed Gray with 8:15 to go in the second quarter.

Henderson had 10 points in the first half as the Hawks held a 57-51 halftime lead.
