GAME RECAP

Hubert Davis scored 18 points and Shawn Bradley added 17 and eight blocked shots to lead a balanced attack as the Dallas Mavericks used a third-quarter run and held off the Vancouver Grizzlies, 90-88, spoiling the coaching debut of Brian Hill.

Michael Finley tallied 16 points and A.C. Green recorded 15 and 14 rebounds for Dallas, which has won eight of nine all-time meetings with Vancouver.

"Everybody contributed in a positive way," Bradley said. "Kevin Ollie had a great game, A.C. got the rebounds he needed to, I got the blocks and we all contributed on the offensive end. We stepped up, covered each other's back and it was a good team win tonight."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 31 points and nine rebounds and Bryant Reeves added 15 points for the Grizzlies, which opened last season with seven straight losses en route to a league-worst 14-68 campaign. Vancouver had a chance to win the game, but rookie guard Antonio Daniels' three-pointer fell off the rim as time expired.

"Obviously I'm very disappointed with this evening's loss," said Hill, who was fired midway through last season by the Orlando Magic. "They trapped a bit, got some turnovers and steals. But when it came down to the last quarter we couldn't get real good offensive execution."

"They showed a lot of confidence in me by putting the ball in my hands down the final stretch and I just missed the final shot," Daniels said. "I had a great look, the ball didn't come off right. I thought it had a chance."

Bradley made a free throw to trigger the 13-0 burst and cut Vancouver's lead to 58-56 with 6:10 left in the third quarter. Samaki Walker made a pair of free throws to cap the run for a 69-60 advantage with 2:12 to go. Ollie, a rookie who played in the CBA last season, had five of his 11 points during the run.

Vancouver was scorelesss for almost five minutes until Ivano Newbill had a tip-in with 1:55 left in the period, making it 69-62. George Lynch had a fast-break dunk and -- after a steal by Newbill -- made a pair of free throws to pull the Grizzlies within 69-66 with 59 seconds left. But Davis answered with a 16-footer and a three-pointer to give Dallas a 74-66 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Abdur-Rahim's 14-footer capped a 6-0 spurt and pulled Vancouver within 78-77 with 7:22 left. Davis made one free throw and a seven-footer by daniels tied it with 5:34 remaining. After a basket by Dennis Scott, the Grizzlies tied it again on an 11-footer by Blue Edwards before Green's layup gave the Mavs the lead for good, 83-81, with 3:38 left.

Scott, who played under Hill at Orlando, shot just 2-of-11.

"Defensively we got all the stops we needed to," Davis said. "Shawn did a tremendous job and Dennis Scott did a great job on Abdur-Rahim. He had to guard him and then play offense too, tough job. But I think our defense won it tonight."
