GAME RECAP

Ray Allen scored 29 points and Glenn Robinson added 20 as the Milwaukee Bucks pulled away in the fourth quarter en route to a 103-88 victory over the shorthanded Philadelphia 76ers in the season opener for both teams.

Milwaukee led 74-67 after three quarters and opened the final period with a 15-6 run. A pair of jumpers by Robinson sandwiched Allen's three-pointer to cap the spurt, which gave the Bucks an 89-73 cushion with 5:53 to play.

A layup by Derrick Coleman cut Philadelphia's deficit to 93-83 with 1:45 remaining, but Allen scored Milwaukee's next seven points to seal the victory.

"I was taking good shots and my teammates were finding me," Allen said. "We play off each other so well."

"Every time that we made a run, they were able to make some shots and withstand our charge at the end," Coleman said.

All-Star point guard Terrell Brandon, acquired in a three-way trade during the offseason, had 16 points and nine assists in his Bucks debut. He also had four of Milwaukee's 16 steals.

"Our defense allowed us to get easy baskets," Robinson said. "I had some easy 15-footers, Ray made some threes and had some layups. Everyone did a very good job around the perimeter."

Coleman had 18 points and 11 rebounds but was unable to prevent Larry Brown from losing in his 76ers' coaching debut. Jim Jackson chipped in 16 points and seven assists in his first game with Philadelphia.

"When you lose, it's hard to find any positives, that's how I feel," Jackson said. "What we have to do is look at what we did wrong, which was we didn't rebound the ball well defensively and we didn't get back well on transition. In order to play better, we're going to have to improve on that."

When asked what he found most distressing about his new team's performance, Brown replied, "We are way behind offensively. I'm still trying to figure out what we can do and what we can't do. We turned the ball over at inopportune times and that really bothered me."

Coleman concurred with his new coach.

"Guys are still learning where they're supposed to be offensively and defensively," he said. "Guys are playing in different positions. It's gonna take some time, we've gotta work hard and learn where we're supposed to be."

Sixers star guard and Rookie of the Year Allen Iverson missed the contest due to a one-game league suspension after pleading guilty to misdemeanor drug possession charges in Virginia this summer.

Allen, who hit 6-of-9 three-pointers, scored 16 points in the first quarter as Milwaukee took a 27-24 edge. Robinson contributed 12 points in the first half, helping the Bucks to a 53-45 halftime lead.

"We sense a lot of good things on the court individually and collectively as a team," Allen said. "When you can sense that, we're gonna be a good team as the season goes along."

Bucks starting center Ervin Johnson, acquired in an offseason trade with Denver, had 10 points and nine boards. Teammate Eliott Perry added 10 points and six assists off the bench.

Robinson made 9-of-15 shots as Milwaukee shot 53 percent (39-of-74) from the field while holding Philadelphia to 42 percent (31-of-74).

"We were very unselfish on the offensive end. We moved the ball very well," Bucks coach Chris Ford said. "We got the ball to the open man. That is what this team is going to be about. That is what we are trying to instill on this team, and the guys are having fun."

Clarence Weatherspoon registered 15 points and seven rebounds for the Sixers, but fellow starter Jerry Stackhouse had just five points and five assists with five turnovers in 26 minutes.

"It was disappointing. We didn't have a good showing," said Stackhouse. "Hopefully it doesn't take too long for us to do what we have to do to win. We missed Allen tonight, we could have used him to run on them."

Doug Overton, starting in place of Iverson, hit just 2-of-9 shots and finished with nine points.

Tyrone Hill, who was acquired from Cleveland along with Brandon, started but missed all three of his shots and fouled out with four points and eight rebounds.
