GAME RECAP

Rex Chapman, Steve Nash and Antonio McDyess combined for 60 points to lead the Phoenix Suns, who started last season with 13 consecutive losses, to a 110-100 season-opening victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Chapman scored 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting, while Nash came off the bench to score a career-high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting in just 20 minutes.

"It was really exciting to get a chance to finally contribute in a regular-season game," said Nash, a second-year guard from Santa Clara. "With Kevin (Johnson) and Jason (Kidd), I don't have a choice. I have to come off the bench but I learned so much from them. That's why I'm having success. The biggest difference from last year to this year is mentally I've grown and become a lot more relaxed and more confident."

McDyess scored 14 of his 17 points in the second quarter, when the Suns rallied from a 30-18 deficit to take a 63-59 halftime lead.

Kidd contributed only six points, but had 16 assists and 14 rebounds.

"On any given night anybody can be the leader," Kidd said. "We still have some things to work on. We just can't come out and think we're going to put the ball in every time. My job is to get the guys the ball and it's tough because we have so many great scorers."

Kidd also excelled defensively, holding opposing point guard Darrick Martin to two points on 0-of-9 shooting.

"Kidd was just phenomenal, 16 assists, 14 rebounds and he shut his man down," Suns coach Danny Ainge said. "That was amazing. He was the star of the game."

Early on, the Suns could not stop Brent Barry, who scored 14 of his 20 points in the first quarter. Barry's fourth three-pointer of the period gave the Clippers a 30-18 lead with 2:48 remaining. Barry was held to six points in the final three quarters.

"We wanted to come out and get off to a good start and we did do a good job of getting the ball down low," Barry said. "Anytime you establish a post-up game, it opens up the perimeter and they just happened to be hitting me and I was knocking down shots.

"The key was Phoenix did a great job in the second half of shutting that down."

Phoenix also dominated from the foul line. The Suns hit 30-of-37 from the line for 82 percent, while the Clippers were just 10-of-12.

"I thought the key to the game tonight was out-free-throwing them," Ainge said. "We got to the penalty in each quarter and that was key for us."

McDyess' 14-footer capped an 8-0 run that gave the Suns a 76-68 lead with six minutes remaining in the third quarter. After the Clippers pulled within 76-72, Nash and Johnson scored all the points in an 8-2 spurt that gave Phoenix an 84-74 bulge with 3:51 left in the period.

"The big thing was everybody played hard the whole game," said Chapman. "Guys got tired and Danny got someone right in. We can't afford to fall behind early. We can't make a habit of that. That's going to hurt us eventually."

Rodney Rogers, Loy Vaught and Lamont Murray each scored 14 points for the Clippers, who had six players in double figures and shot 46 percent (40-of-88) from the field.

"You're dealing with the unknown when you start the ballgame," Clippers coach Bill Fitch said. "You have no track record to begin the year. Tomorrow we'll have a little track record and we have to see what we can clean up. It was the mentral errors, turnovers, and they weren't forced turnovers. When that happens, it's pretty hard to catch up."
