GAME RECAP

Kevin Garnett fueled a third-quarter burst and Chris Carr and Doug West shut down Glen Rice as the Minnesota Timberwolves moved within one win of a franchise milestone with a 106-90 victory over the winless Charlotte Hornets.

Stephon Marbury had 23 points and 13 assists, Tom Gugliotta scored 20 points and Garnett added 18 for the Timberwolves (2-0). The high-scoring trio combined for all the points in a 9-0 run that broke open the game in the third quarter.

"It's a good start for us," Gugliotta said. "Like everybody says, 'It's not a sprint, it's a marathon.' But it's a good start and we beat a good team tonight. That's what we have to do. We have to win at home."

Carr and West helped limit Rice to nine shots and 10 points, all in the first quarter. Rice, who averaged nearly 27 points per game last season, was stopped for the second straight game. He was held to just 11 points in a loss to the New York Knicks on Friday.

"Defensively, we did a good job on Glen Rice, staying out on him, and took him out of the game," Gugliotta said.

"I'm trying to figure it out, but we keep having a hard time shooting the basketball," Hornets coach Dave Cowens said.

Cherokee Parks had 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for Minnesota (2-0), which has never been three games over .500 since entering the NBA in 1989. The Wolves visit Portland on Tuesday.

"The big thing was the carryover from last night," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "When you play aggressively you will have success in this league. We executed our offense extremely well."

Matt Geiger scored 21 points for the Hornets, who started 3-5 last season but finished 54-28. Charlotte again was without guard Bobby Phills, who sat out with an ankle injury.

The Wolves led 50-45 at halftime, but a drive by Vlade Divac pulled the Hornets within 53-51 with 9:57 to play in the third quarter.

Minnesota answered with the next nine points. Garnett made an eight-foot jumper and Marbury buried a 20-footer. Gugliotta scored and was fouled on a breakaway drive. His free throw and Garnett's 12-footer gave the Wolves a 62-51 bulge with 6:44 to go in the quarter.

Minnesota led 77-65 after three periods and put away the game with six straight points. Marbury made two free throws, West sank a 10-footer and Sam Mitchell dunked for an 83-65 lead with 9:55 to play.

The Hornets got no closer than 16 points thereafter and the Wolves opened their largest lead at 99-77 on a follow shot by Parks with 3:54 remaining.

Carr and West scored nine points apiece and Gugliotta grabbed nine rebounds for the Wolves, who shot 46 percent (43-of-94) from the field and held a 52-40 rebounding edge.

David Wesley and Tony Farmer scored 10 points each and Anthony Mason had 11 rebounds for the Hornets, who shot 40 percent (31-of-77) and committed 16 turnovers.

"We started out pretty good, but made one change and started to fall apart and lost our flow," Cowens said. "We got killed on the boards."
