GAME RECAP

Khalid Reeves and A.C. Green led a 23-2 run over the final 5:01 to rally the Dallas Mavericks to an 89-81 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics, giving them consecutive road wins for the first time in 21 months.

The Mavericks, who won just 10 road games last season, notched two straight road victories for the first time since winning at Denver and Atlanta on February 29th and March 1st, 1996. Dallas won 90-88 at Vancouver on Friday.

Dallas trailed 79-66 when Dennis Scott got things started with a jumper. Reeves followed with a 20-footer and Green cut the deficit to seven points with a short jumper with 3:47 to go.

"When they got the big lead, we put our heads down for a minute," admitted Finley. "Then we started to press (defensively) and we cut the lead to 11, then seven."

Hubert Davis made two free throws and Reeves scored again before Green tied it with a three-point play with 2:49 remaining. Michael Finley's two free throws 40 seconds later put the Mavs ahead, 81-79.

Seattle's last points came 14 seconds later on a jumper by Hersey Hawkins, but Reeves countered by reeling off the next six points to put away the game.

"As we got momentum, they lost momentum, and then the tide swung," said Mavericks coach Jim Cleamons. "We were the ones with the hot hand."

"It just snowballed on us," observed Seattle coach George Karl. "We lost our composure and couldn't find any confidence."

Finley had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Shawn Bradley added 17 and 14 for Dallas, which enjoyed a 50-37 edge on the boards. Reeves registered 12 of his 16 points in the decisive fourth quarter, in which Seattle was held to 10 points.

The Mavs were 25-of-33 from the foul line, while Seattle was 14-of-17. Dallas had no turnovers in the fourth quarter while snapping an eight-game losing streak in Seattle.

Dale Ellis recorded 15 points and Vin Baker chipped in 14 as the SuperSonics lost for just the second time in their last 14 home openers. Detlef Schrempf added 14 points and eight rebounds.

"We had no offense and no defense you can't expect to win playing like that," Schrempf said. "We just all of a sudden didn't make any plays."

Sonics All-Star guard Gary Payton had 12 points and 12 assists, but made a couple of poor plays at the finish that ruined any chance at a comeback.

The Sonics trailed by four in the final minute when Payton drove the lane and passed in mid-air to Hawkins on the left baseline. Hawkins, forced off-balance by the errant toss, threw the ball into a crowd of Mavericks.

With about 30 seconds to go, Seattle trailed 85-81 when Payton had the ball stripped by Kevin Ollie, leading to a pair of free throws by Reeves. Payton committed four of the SuperSonics' 10 turnovers.

"We were thinking the game is over and we started doing things that we weren't supposed to do," Payton said. "Instead of being aggressive and taking our shots, we started being tentative by passing the ball and being lackadaisical."

The Mavericks shot 58 percent (11-of-19) from the field in the final quarter and 44 percent (32-of-73) overall.
