GAME RECAP

Tim Hardaway's buzzer-beating floater capped a wild final 16 seconds and gave the Miami Heat a 109-108 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Playing their home opener, the Wizards trailed by 18 points in the third quarter and did not lead until there was 2:26 to play. With Washington holding a 106-104 edge, Hardaway drove into the lane and scored while drawing a foul from Rod Strickland. He hit the ensuing free throw for a 107-106 lead with 15 seconds to play.

Strickland appeared to redeem himself by hitting a layup with five seconds left for a 108-107 advantage, but Hardaway took the inbounds pass, drove up the left side and leapt from just behind the free-throw line with a rainbow shot as time expired.

"I got the ball and I'm not settling for just a jump shot," Hardaway said. "I just scooped it up and it went in. I didn't even see it go in. It shouldn't have been that tough in the first place."

"I didn't realize he could come down and make a shot like that," Washington forward Juwan Howard said. "You have to pat him on the back. He's the leader, the big-time player, the All-Star."

Hardaway had 26 points and eight assists to lead the Heat (2-0). Jamal Mashburn added 19 points and eight rebounds and Isaac Austin contributed 18 and 13.

Webber registered 30 points and 13 rebounds to pace the winless Wizards. Strickland finished with 20 points and 13 assists and Calbert Cheaney had 19 points.

Miami took a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter and extended it to 96-88 on Mashburn's three-pointer with 8:47 to play. But Tracy Murray buried consecutive three-pointers and Cheaney added a bucket for a 96-96 tie with 7:36 to go.

Washington took its first lead at 102-101 on Webber's jumper with 2:26 left and Cheaney followed with a jumper with 1:38 remaining. Austin hit two free throws and Hardaway one around one from Howard to cut the Wizards' lead to 105-104 with 56 seconds to play. Howard added one more free throw with 25 seconds left to set up the final flurry.

"We had an opportunity to win the game, it was that simple," Washington coach Bernie Bickerstaff said. "The guys reached down and put themselves in that position to win. We've just got to find a way to get it done in the end."

Hardaway and Austin each had 10 points as the Heat opened a 62-54 halftime lead. Miami took its largest lead, 81-63, on a jumper by Hardaway with 4:55 left in the third quarter. But Cheaney had 10 points and Webber nine in the period as the Wizards trimmed the deficit to 87-80 entering the final period.

"I'm happy with the win, but I'm disappointed with our defense," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We're not playing defense the way we are capable of. We were fortunate to win the game because we shouldn't have let them back in it."

Voshon Lenard scored 12 points and P.J. Brown added 10 for the Heat, who shot 53 percent (40-for-76) from the field.

Howard finished with 15 points and seven rebounds for the Wizards, who shot 48 percent (43-of-90).
