GAME RECAP

Penny Hardaway shook off an injury to score 32 points and Derek Harper added 19 and seven assists as the Orlando Magic won for the first time under Chuck Daly, defeating the Boston Celtics, 107-96.

Hardaway left the game midway through the first quarter with a bruised right wrist after he was fouled by Dee Brown attempting a breakaway layup.

"I thought our press unit did a pretty good job against their press unit especially in the second quarter," said Daly. "I watched the Chicago game here. You get into a frenetic style and they want you to play the same way. I just told our guys, starting in the second quarter, let's try to get into our offense. Move the ball and make the extra pass."

Ron Mercer had 23 points and Antoine Walker chipped in 19 and 11 rebounds for the Celtics, who lost their first game under Rick Pitino.

Orlando never trailed in the game after scoring the first seven points en route to a 14-2 lead. The Magic shot 52 percent (15-of-29) from the floor in the first half while the Celtics made just 15-of-53 attempts (28 percent) over the first 24 minutes.

A 9-0 run midway through the second quarter brought the Celtics within 58-49, the closet they would get. Orlando answered the with layups by Hardaway and Bo Outlaw that pushed the lead to 62-49 at the 5:24 mark.

Hardaway had 10 points in the first quarter as the Magic took a 29-15 advantage. He added seven points in the third quarter and 13 in the final period. Hardaway's three-pointer with 7:46 to play gave Orlando its biggest lead of the night, 105-84.

"We thought they (Boston) would be a little over-confident coming into tonight after beating the Bulls," Hardaway said. "I thought we handled the press tonight. There were a lot of unforced turnovers that we shouldn't have had. It is a lot easier playing for Chuck right now. He only wants you to defend and rebound."

Orlando was 9-of-17 on three-point attempts, with six of the nine coming in the fourth quarter.

"When you have a guy like a Penny (Hardaway) and a guy like Rony (Seikaly) who can post up, we have some talented guys and talent can go very far in this league," said Magic forward Horace Grant. "We showed tonight what we are capable of doing when we work together. Tonight was definetly our night when it comes to shooting."

Boston was held to 38 percent (35-of-92) from the field for the game. The Celtics outrebounded the Magic, 48-40.

"Maybe it was just a victory hang over from Friday," said Pitino. I told them not to get down. Nights like these are going to happen. We are getting into a rut and falling behind early in games and our press is pressing out of weakness and desperation rather than as a strength."

The Magic have won eight of their last nine meetings with Boston, including a 4-0 sweep last season.
