GAME RECAP

Eddie Jones had a career-high 35 points and Elden Campbell hit a pair of free throws with 3.8 seconds remaining to seal the Los Angeles Lakers 101-98 victory over the Sacramento Kings.

Jones, who figured prominently in a recent trade rumor between the two teams, was red-hot early, scoring the Lakers first 10 points of the game. His previous career high of 34 was set March 9th against New Jersey.

"I'm just trying to be aggressive and work hard for the team," Jones said. "When I'm agressive ou there, good things happen for me."

"We're not going back to L.A. without Eddie Jones," said Lakers coach Del Harris. "Where do you hear this mess. You can't get sucked into every rumor you hear."

Campbell, who finished with 21 points, was a perfect 9-for-9 from the line as the Lakers improved to 2-0 without the services of suspended Shaquille O'Neal. The All-Star center is serving a one-game suspension for an altercation with Utah center Greg Ostertag.

Mitch Richmond, who is reportedly the key figure in the deal that would send Jones and center Sean Rooks to Sacramento, led the Kings with 24 points. Billy Owens desperation three-point attempt at the buzzer bounced off the front of the rim as the Kings remained winless in three games this season and seven straight overall against Los Angeles.

Corliss Williamson contributed nine of his 13 points in the fourth quarter for the Kings, but missed four out of five free throws down the stretch.

"It's frustrating," Williamson said. "You could say that you gave it a good effort, but the bottom line is that we didn't get the win. For some reason things haven't gone our way yet."

After Lawrence Funderburke's dunk with 2:17 remaining in the fourth quarter knotted the game at 94-94, Campbell made two free throws to put the Lakers ahead. Williamson then missed one of two on the other end.

Nick Van Exel who finished with 19 points, extended the Laker lead to 99-95 with three free throws down the stretch, but Mitch Richmond's three-pointer with 3.8 seconds remaining cut the lead to one. But Campbell secured the victory with a pair of free throws with three seconds left.

The Kings final chance fizzled when Owens inbound pass with less than three seconds remaining bounced off Richmond's leg and back into the hands of Owens, whose futile buzzer-beater clanged back off the front of the rim.

Jones was 14-of-17 from the field while the rest of the Lakers managed to shoot just 37 percent (22-of-60). Los Angeles was solid from the free throw line, making 25-of-31 attempts.

Olden Polynice had a near triple-double with 16 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. He was 7-of-11 from the field as the Kings shot 51 percent (39-of-77) from the field.

The game, which was close throughout, featured 21 lead changes and neither team holding more than a seven-point advantage.

Sacramento point guard Bobby Hurley left the game in the first quarter with an apparent leg injury and did not return. There was no further report on his status after the game.

Los Angeles starting forwards, Rick Fox and Robert Horry combined to shoot 2-of-10 and had just four points and 10 rebounds in 60 minutes.
