GAME RECAPShawn Bradley's three-point play with 5:23 remaining ignited a 9-0 run and lifted the unbeaten Dallas Mavericks to a 92-87 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies in their home opener.
Vancouver, which led by as many as 14 points in the first half, held an 84-82 edge with six minutes to play. But Bradley's three-point play gave Dallas the lead for good. Hubert Davis followed with a basket, increasing the lead to three, and A.C. Green followed with two free throws with 3:23 to go.
Michael Finley, who scored 29 points, added a baseline jumper from the right side with 2:55 to play, capping the run and giving the Mavericks their biggest lead, 91-84.
"We made a concerted effort to win our games at home," Dallas coach Jim Cleamons said. "Our defense has come alive in the fourth quarter. We have gotten better, so what we have to do is keep learning. We have a lot of work to do, but they are playing hard and playing with some energy and emotion. That's the way you have to play this game."
Bradley had 11 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks -- including five rejections in the first quarter -- for the Mavericks, who are off to their first 3-0 start since 1995, when they started the season 4-0. Dallas was 24-58 last season and did not win their third game until November 21st.
"We're not a selfish team, everybody believes in each other. We need nights like this and the crowd was a big factor," Dallas' Dennis Scott said.
Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 28 points and Otis Thorpe added 16 and 14 rebounds for Vancouver, which has lost 14 of its last 16 road games dating back to February 12th.
"In the first half, we were running and we were competing for the low post," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "We were getting good ball movement and getting the ball inside and attacking the basket. In the second half, we did a little more standing around."
Abdur-Rahim scored 15 points in the first quarter as the Grizzlies jumped out to a 30-18 lead.
Scott, who chipped in 28 for Dallas, had 14 of his 18 first-half points in the second quarter as Dallas trailed, 54-50 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Scott added three three-pointers and Finley also hit one from beyond the arc to tie the game at 74.
"I have to give credit to my teammates," Scott said. "They have been patient with me the last two weeks. I have been hurt and they have not played with me much. I am still a little off."
Vancouver, who fell to Dallas in its home opener last Friday night, is 3-13 all-time in Texas.
