GAME RECAP

Juwan Howard had 29 points and 13 rebounds and Tracy Murray added 20 points off the bench as the Washington Wizards used a huge second quarter to rout the winless Denver Nuggets, 120-96.

The blowout provided sweet revenge for Washington coach Bernie Bickerstaff, who was returning to Denver for the first time since leaving the Nuggets' general manager's post last February. The win was also the first for Washington in McNichols Arena since December 21st, 1991 and just its second in 11 games in Denver.

"Our guys have done a pretty nice job," said Bickerstaff. "We just keep digging deeper. We ask them to stay in the game and if the coaches don't screw it up, they have a chance. The Nuggets are a young team that has to grow. They play hard and compete."

Wizards point guard Rod Strickland added 13 points and 10 assists, including the 5,000th of his career early in the first quarter. The road win was the second in two nights for Washington, which dropped its first two games of the season.

Eric Williams scored 26 points and rookie Danny Fortson added 22 and 11 rebounds for the Nuggets, who have dropped their first three contests under new coach Bill Hanzlik. Denver has lost by an average of 17.7 points per contest.

"We did not give up, but we did get discouraged and showed our youth," said Hanzlik. "The most disturbing thing to me was that our defense did not play well. We missed our assignments and we missed situations we went over at the shootaround. Nobody likes losing."

Howard, who shot 10-of-15 from the field, had 20 points in the first half as Denver opened a 59-43 lead. A perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line, Howard was the only Wizard to log more than 28 minutes.

"We have to play better early in the season then we did last season," Howard said. "I'm not there yet, but it is coming soon. I'm still not satisfied, but tonight helps my confidence level."

The Nuggets drew within 35-34 with just over nine minutes remaining but the Wizards closed the quarter with a 24-9 run. Howard had eight and Strickland and Calbert Cheaney added four apiece. Consecutive three-pointers by Chris Whitney and Harvey Grant pushed the lead to 16 points just before the half.

Howard dominated the third period with nine points, five rebounds and four assists. Washington made 12-of-19 shots in the quarter and were 10-of-13 from the free-throw line in opening up a 93-64 advantage.

Denver was unable to draw any closer than 23 points in the final quarter despite holding an 18-8 advantage on the boards. The Nuggets have dropped seven straight home games dating back to last season.
