GAME RECAP

Kevin Johnson sank all 16 of his free throws and finished with 23 points as the Phoenix Suns used a huge first-half run to rout the struggling Utah Jazz, 106-84.

Phoenix reeled off a 26-7 run bridging the first and second quarters to open a 38-19 lead with 8:52 left in the first half and the Jazz came no closer than 13 points thereafter.

Johnson scored four points in a 10-0 spurt late in the first quarter and Cliff Robinson, who had 13 points, converted a three-point play to highlight an 11-2 run which opened the second period. George McCloud, signed as a free agent in the off-season, capped the burst with a three-pointer, his first basket as a Phoenix Sun.

Utah trailed, 52-33, at the half, setting an America West Arena record for fewest first-half points by one team.

"Our team held them to just 36 percent shooting, against one of the best shooting teams in the league last year," Suns coach Danny Ainge said. "It was one of those games that we should have won. I thought the defensive effort was great."

Antonio McDyess scored 13 points and Jason Kidd added 11, 13 assists and seven rebounds for the Suns, who have opened the season with back-to-back wins after starting last season with 13 straight defeats. Phoenix, which is 2-0 for the first time since the 1991-92 season, did not earn its second victory last season until December 12th.

Johnson, who made 3-of-9 shots, set a Suns home record for consecutive free throws made in a game. He was one short of the all-time team record in one game, set by Paul Silas in 1971.

"We did what we were supposed to," Johnson said. "We felt good about our effort, especially on the defensive end. 2-0 says it all."

Karl Malone had 22 points and 11 rebounds for the defending Western Conference champion Jazz (1-3), who have had problems without injured All-Star point guard John Stockton. Utah did not lose its third game last season until December 12th and has dropped three straight games for the first time since losing four in a row in January of last season.

"We have to decide if we want to play or if we're just going to do a lot of talking," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "Everyone on the squad thinks we are going to get help from somewhere. Nothing is going to fall out of the sky. There is no magic wand. We just need to go in there and stop dogging it.

"Everybody steps into a different role when you lose a player of Stockton's caliber," Sloan added. "The players we have in there obviously do not have John Stockton's ability. As I said, we need to work harder. A lot of guys think they're working hard till they realize they're getting their butt kicked."

Kidd's two free throws gave Phoenix its biggest lead, 69-44, with 5:54 left in the third quarter. But Bryon Russell's three-pointer to end the third period capped an 11-3 run for the Jazz, who pulled within 76-63 heading into the fourth.

The Suns secured the victory by scoring the first eight points of the final quarter.

"We missed a lot of layups and easy shots," Malone said. "There's got to be a way to stitch it up. Pick up the intensity and get the job done."

"Looking back on these last four games, there's no emotion or enthusiasm on the floor," Jazz guard Jeff Hornacek said. "It's just simply a matter of us thinking that if we're going to show up out there we'll win games. Especially without John (Stockton), that's not going to happen."

Cedric Ceballos chipped in 10 points for Phoenix, which had 19 fast-break points compared to just two for Utah.

Hornacek scored 17 points and Howard Eisley added 11 for the Jazz, who made just 29-of-80 shots from the field.

"If we come out and play like that on defense throughout the season, then we'll be in the games," Kidd said. "Everybody is playing well. We just have to concentrate on playing defense."
