GAME RECAP

Clyde Drexler scored 43 points, including six during a pivotal run late in the second quarter, to lead the Houston Rockets past the winless Los Angeles Clippers, 124-110.

Drexler, who made 15-of-25 shots and was 10-of-11 from the free throw line, broke the 40-point plateau for the first time since December 2nd, 1995. He fell seven points shy of his career high, set against the Sacramento Kings on January 6th, 1989, but posted his career best as a Rocket.

"We got a chance to take a little frustration out on the Clippers," Drexler said. "We are happy to put last night's game behind us. We had a good team effort, we can play a lot of people because our bench is really deep."

Mario Elie added 20 points and Kevin Willis chipped in with 16 off the bench. Charles Barkley had 13 points and 21 rebounds for Houston, which recovered from Tuesday's 118-94 defeat to the Seattle Supersonics.

"We really had it going tonight," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "Clyde was in a zone and Charles was all over the boards. We came out tonight and played great right from the beginning. I thought we had a lot of energy and that was nice to see."

"We played terrific tonight," Barkley said. "We played hard and got off to a lot of fast breaks. So far we have gotten off to a good start but we have got to keep it up."

Brent Barry had 26 points and nine rebounds for Los Angeles, which has dropped its first three games of the season. The Clippers have dropped six straight home games to the Rockets.

"There are one million reasons why we lost," said Clippers coach Bill Fitch. "Each guy has to pull the rope in the same direction and I'm surprised this group is going through this because this is a veteran group."

Houston forward Rodrick Rhodes took an elbow to the nose in the first quarter and left the game. He didn't return but wasn't hurt bad enough to warrant an X-ray.

The Rockets, who never trailed in the contest, raced to a 16-3 lead after four minutes and led 33-19 after one quarter. Drexler, who played the entire first quarter, made all six of his shots and matched the Clippers output with 19 points in the period.

Los Angeles drew within 48-38 with 4:08 left in the half on a three-pointer by Barry. But Drexler keyed a 14-7 burst with six points during the stretch. Barry had 11 of his points and six of his rebounds in the second quarter but the Clippers were unable to cut the deficit to single digits.

Houston opened the second half with an 11-4 run to open a 24-point bulge and the Clippers were unable to draw much closer over the final 24 minutes. Elie sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around five points by Drexler during the spurt.

The Rockets led by as many as 25 in the final quarter and held a 111-88 advantage with 6:43 to play. The Clippers closed the game with a 22-13 run but were unable to overcome the early deficit.

The Rockets held a 51-43 edge on the boards and committed just eight turnovers.
