GAME RECAP

David Robinson scored 22 points and pulled down 17 rebounds and rookie Tim Duncan recorded four of his 19 points on critical free throws down the stretch to pace the San Antonio Spurs to an 87-79 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies, who trailed 66-60 at the end of three quarters, pulled within five points on Anthony Peeler's bucket with 1:52 left. Otis Thorpe made it 80-77 on a drive 34 seconds later, but Vancouver would get just two free throws the rest of the way.

Robinson hit a basket with just under a minute left and Duncan followed with a free throw for an 83-77 lead. Grizzlies rookie Antonio Daniels made two foul shots, but Jaren Jackson answered with a steal and a basket with 16 seconds left. Duncan sank three foul shots to ice it.

"We've got a long way to go and we've made a lot of mistakes," conceded Duncan, "but we made it count when we needed to."

Jackson, getting a chance at shooting guard when Vinny Del Negro was placed on the injured list with a sprained ankle prior to the game, scored 15 points in 27 minutes as San Antonio bounced back from a double-overtime loss to Chicago.

Duncan grabbed nine of the Spurs 50 rebounds and Sean Elliott chipped in 15 points as San Antonio shot 45 percent (37-of-83) from the floor.

"I hope I can keep on playing this well and (even) push it up," Duncan said, "because I know I can."

The Spurs' talented frontcourt trio of Robinson, Elliott and Duncan poured in 54 points despite hitting just 8-of-16 free-throw attempts.

Peeler scored 19 points and Thorpe added 16 for the Grizzlies, who shot 42 percent (34-of-81) from the field. Daniels, given the responsibility of running the club in his rookie season, finished with 12 points and eight assists.

The game was tight with three minutes left in the second quarter, but the Spurs took command shortly after with a 9-2 run that gave them a 44-37 halftime lead. Robinson, who pulled down nine offensive boards, scored 12 of his 14 first-half points in the opening quarter.

"I thought the effort was there for the most part," said Grizzlies' coach Brian Hill. "I don't think we were as good defensively as last night in Dallas (a 92-87 loss). But then, their inside people present a whole different set of problems."

Vancouver's Shareef Abdur-Rahim was held to 11 points on 3-for-15 shooting after averaging 26.6 points through the first three games.
