GAME RECAP

Brent Barry scored six of his 17 points during a pivotal 17-6 run to open the second half as the Los Angeles Clippers broke into the victory column with a 98-85 triumph over the winless Sacramento Kings.

Barry had six points, Darrick Martin added five and rookie Maurice Taylor had four during the decisive spurt, which extended a two-point halftime lead into a 62-49 advantage with 5:50 to play in the third quarter.

Lamond Murray added 14 points for the Clippers, who had dropped their first three games of the season. Rodney Rogers added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Los Angeles, which a 50-37 advantage on the boards.

"One of these teams had to get a win tonight and as much as I love Eddie (Jordan), he is young enough," Clippers coach Bill Fitch said. "He can wait to get another one. I thought we played with a lot of energy. We ran the ball really well in the game, which set the pace."

"This let us know that we can still win in this league," Murray added. "Now we've got to try and keep it rolling. We forced them to take bad shots and that enabled us to push the ball and run the floor."

Mitch Richmond scored 25 points and Billy Owens added 15 and eight rebounds for the Kings, who fell to 0-4. Sacramento joined Philadelphia (0-4), Golden State (0-4) and Denver (0-5) as the league's only winless teams.

"Certainly this is a very low point in my coaching career and one of the low points in my basketball career, only because I saw a loss of composure and a loss of confidence," said Kings coach Eddie Jordan. "This is not something I could really envision. This is one of my worst nightmares starting off this way."

"It was a very frustrating night, we were still turning the ball over a lot," said Richmond. "It was a sloppy game all the way through -- just a bad game on our part."

Kings forward Michael Smith suffered a fractured right wrist during the first quarter. X-rays revealed a fractured scaphoid bone and the third-year player is expected to miss eight to 12 weeks. He had five points in eight minutes but the Kings' bench failed to step up in his absence, making just 13-of-41 shots.

Martin opened the second half with a driving layup but Olden Polynice hit a pair of free throws. Barry buried a three-pointer for a 50-45 lead before Richmond sank a layup.

Rogers hit a pair of free throws with 9:47 to go and Martin drained a three-pointer to push the lead to 55-47. Two free throws by Corliss Williamson cut into the deficit but Barry answered with another three-pointer. Taylor hit a 10-foot jumper and his nine-foot hook shot capped the burst.

While the Clippers were getting their offense in gear, the Kings went ice-cold from the field. After Richmond hit his layup 1:48 into the quarter, Sacramento did not make another field goal until Owens' jumper with 3:34 to go -- a span of 10 straight misses.

The Kings were able to draw within nine points midway through the final quarter but the Clippers used an 8-0 spurt to seal the victory. Lorenzen Wright and Eric Piatkowski had dunks before Pooh Richardson and James Robinson made baskets to give Los Angeles an 88-71 lead with 4:07 remaining.

Six players scored in double figures for Los Angeles, which was just 7-of-16 from three-point range. Richmond and Owens were the only players in double figures for the Kings, who shot 36 percent (31-of-86) from the field.

The teams combined for 48 fouls and 47 turnovers.
