GAME RECAP

Jaren Jackson hit four critical free throws and scored 14 points off the bench as the San Antonio Spurs overcame the losses of David Robinson and Tim Duncan to fouls and held on for an 87-80 victory over the Utah Jazz.

Robinson, who finished with 28 points and eight rebounds, exited with 2:59 left and San Antonio holding a 77-69 lead. After Jeff Hornacek hit a jumper, Karl Malone converted a three-point play as Duncan, who had 13 rebounds, fouled out with 1:51 to go.

Three free throws by Malone around one by San Antonio's Avery Johnson pulled the Jazz within 80-79 with 25 seconds remaining. But Jackson sank two free throws less than three seconds later and, after Malone hit 1-of-2 from the stripe, added two more free throws with 19.6 seconds to play for an 84-80 edge.

"It wasn't pretty to look at, but we got the win. We got it done," Jackson said. "I was just feeding off the team, getting aggressive, and trying to play a team game."

San Antonio's Malik Rose blocked Howard Eisley's shot out of bounds, stole the ensuing inbounds pass and put home a dunk with 6.8 seconds left to secure the victory.

"I don't think Utah fell asleep. The second team came in and put on the defensive pressure," Rose said.

Malone had 26 points and seven boards for the defending Western Conference champions, who have yet to post consecutive wins this season. The Jazz (2-4) did not have four losses last season until December 17th.

Hornacek scored 12 points but made just 2-of-10 shots from the field as the Jazz shot 33 percent (19-for-58).

"It was a combination of the good defense and a bad shooting night. I had three open shots and missed them," Hornacek said.

Robinson hit 10-of-13 from the foul line and sank 9-of-14 shots for San Antonio, which made 43 percent (30-of-70).

"I was frustrated sitting on the bench, but it was good that the bench came in and did a good job finishing the game," Robinson said.

Sean Elliott had 11 points and six boards and Duncan, who blocked four shots, scored eight points. The Spurs had a 45-33 rebounding edge.

The first half was tight throughout, with Utah taking a 35-34 halftime lead.

Robinson took control for the Spurs in the third quarter, scoring all but four of his team's 18 points in the period. But Malone scored eight in the quarter, helping the Jazz to a 55-52 lead heading into the final frame.

San Antonio took the lead for good with an 11-3 run to open the fourth quarter.

"Two years ago the Spurs won 61 games, and basically they have the same team as they had back then," Hornacek explained. "And you add Tim Duncan, and it makes them an outstanding team with two big men. The backup center, Will Perdue, would start for some teams."
