GAME RECAP

David Robinson scored 36 points, including a tip-in of his own miss at the buzzer, giving the San Antonio Spurs a wild 93-92 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, their fourth straight win.

An eight-foot runner by Stephon Marbury had given Minnesota a 92-91 lead with 2.8 seconds to go. From halfcourt, Spurs guard Avery Johnson threw an inbounds lob pass to Robinson, who caught it but missed a short jumper before tipping it in as the horn sounded.

"This was a nice win," Robinson said. "The tip-in to win the game was a play for me from the beginning. When I caught the ball and stepped through I was surprised to have a clean path. Those I have to dunk, but we got the ball in the hole to win the game. That's all that matters. Two point eight seconds is a long time. I knew there was plenty of time to make a move to get a good shot. I just should not have missed the first shot."

"The ball actually hit the floor first and Robinson made a hell of a catch just to get to that ball," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders said. "The most surprising thing was that after he caught it, he missed it."

The basket by Robinson, who also had 16 rebounds, was the 14th lead change of the fourth quarter. The teams swapped the lead six times in the final 93 seconds.

"It was a hell of a game," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Both teams fought hard. We were lucky. It could have gone either way."

Rookie Tim Duncan added 22 points and nine boards for the Spurs, who improved to 6-1 and held onto first place in the Midwest Division. San Antonio, which hosts Minnesota on Saturday, is 4-0 against division foes.

Tom Gugliotta had 22 points and nine rebounds and Marbury added 15 and 11 assists for the Timberwolves, who were beaten 54-27 on the boards and squandered a 12-point third-quarter lead.

"We are a good rebounding team," Popovich said. "What we are not is a careful team. Our turnovers have made wins difficult for us. Most of our wins have been like tonight when we looked pretty ugly."

"We played our hearts out tonight," Marbury said. "We had them. They made a great play. Robinson made a great shot. They controlled the boards tonight."

Robinson, who was 12-of-24 from the field and 12-of-15 from the line, made a free throw to give San Antonio an 87-86 lead with 1:43 to go. Marbury hit two foul shots 10 seconds later, but Robinson answered with a seven-footer in the lane for an 89-88 edge with 1:10 left.

Kevin Garnett made a pair from the line to give Minnesota the lead with 58 seconds left before Chuck Person was tripped by Sam Mitchell and sank two foul shots with nine seconds remaining.

Johnson and Sean Elliott scored eight points apiece for the Spurs, who shot 43 percent (35-of-82), including 1-of-11 from three-point range. Person was 0-of-7 from behind the arc.

Garnett and Cherokee Parks scored 14 apiece for the Wolves, who shot 48 percent (38-of-79). Mitchell had 12 points and Chris Carr 11 as Minnesota had six players in double figures. Garnett added five steals and four blocks.

Carr scored eight points as the Wolves bridged the second and third quarters with a 16-0 burst, turning a four-point deficit into a 50-38 lead. Garnett capped the spurt with an 18-footer with 10:21 remaining in the third period.

Robinson scored nine points in the quarter as the Spurs closed to 68-63 entering the final 12 minutes. They opened the quarter with an 8-2 run, taking a 71-70 lead on a hook by Duncan with 9:13 remaining.

"They had a lot of size and we couldn't really shake them," Saunders said. "It was a tough game to lose. We just couldn't put it away when we had the chance."

Matched up against the "Twin Towers" of Robinson and Duncan, Gugliotta and Parks nevertheless scored eight points apiece as Minnesota took a 22-19 lead after one quarter.

"Tim is solid," Robinson said. "He is still trying to figure out how to play next to me. But once he gets it right, he will be outstanding, with great post moves, good passes and scoring."
