GAME RECAP

Karl Malone scored 18 of his 26 points in the first half and Jeff Hornacek added 19 as the Utah Jazz continued their dominance over the Vancouver Grizzlies with a 98-80 victory.

The Jazz improved to 9-0 all-time against the Grizzlies, who were trying for a club-record three straight wins.

Malone and Bryon Russell each scored four points during a 17-6 spurt that gave Utah a 46-30 lead in the second quarter. Shandon Anderson added 11 points off the bench and Howard Eisley dished out 10 assists for the Jazz, who won for just the second time in their last five games.

"We've been playing hard, but things haven't gone well for us," said Hornacek. "We've been working hard in practice and just trying to go out there and give it our best."

"It's not like I haven't come off the bench before," explained Russell. "I probably needed that to get me going. For six games I hadn't gotten myself going but I thought I played good tonight."

As a starter, Russell averaged 5.8 points and 2.7 rebounds in six games. The bench, led by Anderson and Russell -- who had eight points -- gave Utah a lift with 30 points.

Bryant Reeves scored 15 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim chipped in 13 for the Grizzlies, who recorded a season-low in scoring and fell to 0-3 on the road.

"We lacked a lot of energy tonight," said Abdur-Rahim. "We came out kind of dead and they were a more upbeat team.

"I don't think we had any juice right from the beginning of the game," added Grizzlies coach Brian Hill. "They beat us to every loose ball and every rebound."

After Blue Edwards' short jumper tied it, 21-21, Hornacek sank a lay-in to put Utah ahead for good with 1:01 left in the first quarter.

Reeves had 13 points in the first half, but the Grizzlies shot just 36 percent (15-for-42) and trailed at halftime, 53-33. He sprained an ankle and saw limited action in the second half.

"I felt very good starting the game off and felt like I was getting really involved in it," said Reeves. "It's unfortunate that it happened, but you got to go on."

Hornacek's 17-footer less than two minutes into the third quarter gave the Jazz their biggest lead, 59-36. Vancouver got no chance to narrow the gap and Utah regained a 23-point cushion five more times in the period.

"The one thing that was important to us is that we were active defensively," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. "We had 26 deflections in the first half and I believe 16 in the third quarter."

The Grizzlies crept within 90-77 on a free throw by Antonio Daniels with 2:40 left, but the Jazz answered quickly. Eisley followed with a layup and Antoine Carr nailed an 18-footer before Eisley sank a jumper to build the lead back to 17.

Sam Mack had three three-pointers and 13 points in the fourth quarter for Vancouver.
