GAME RECAP

Derrick Coleman scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half and grabbed a season-high 14 rebounds to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to their second straight victory, 99-98 over the Dallas Mavericks.

Allen Iverson scored 31 points to lead the 76ers, who had dropped their first five games. Jerry Stackhouse matched a season high with 21 points, including a three-pointer that put Philadelphia ahead for good with 2:20 to play.

Former 76er Shawn Bradley had 20 points and 13 rebounds and Michael Finley chipped in with 18 points for the Mavericks, who have dropped four straight games after winning their first three.

The 76ers had an 87-80 lead with under four minutes left in the fourth quarter, but Hubert Davis buried a pair of three-pointers around a steal and layup by Khalid Reeves to put the Mavericks ahead, 88-87, with 2:47 to play.

Stackhouse answered with a three-pointer to give Philadelphia the lead and Iverson followed with a three-pointer to boost the Sixers' advantage to 93-88 with 1:37 to go. A bucket by Bradley, who had nine points in the final period, brought Dallas within three with 1:20 remaining.

"Stackhouse and Iverson's two big three-pointers coming down the stretch with the clock running down were two very good shots," Dallas coach Jim Cleamons said. "We forced them to do what we wanted them to do, take deep perimeter shots. But give them credit, they knocked the shots down."

Former Maverick Jim Jackson drove the lane for a layup and Coleman hit a pair of free throws to extend Philadelphia's lead to 97-90 with 33 seconds left. Finley hit two three-pointers in the final 12 seconds to make it close.

A steal and layup by Reeves gave Dallas its largest lead, 65-57, with 6:27 left in the third quarter before Coleman got hot and the Mavericks went cold. A pair of free throws by Coleman started a 12-2 spurt, which he fueled with seven points. His three-pointer tied the game, 65-65, with 3:49 left in the period, and the Mavericks did not score again until a layup by Kurt Thomas gave them a 67-66 lead with 42 seconds remaining.

"I'm really taking what the defense is giving me," Coleman said. "Just trying to really go to the boards and rebound."

"The biggest thing is they got up eight and we didn't let it get worse than that," Philadelphia coach Larry Brown said. "I thought we picked up our defense in the fourth quarter."

Dallas led for most of the first quarter before Iverson scored half of his 14 points in the period in the final 2:11 to give the Sixers a 27-24 advantage. The Mavericks battled back to take a 48-44 halftime lead behind 12 points from A.C. Green and 11 from Bradley.

Iverson had six assists and four steals and Jackson finished with eight points and seven rebounds for Philadelphia, which shot 54 percent (37-for-68) from the field. The Sixers have shot at least 50 percent in four straight games. Rookie Tim Thomas, who was hospitalized Wednesday after injuring his back in a fall against Houston, did not play.

Reeves had 14 points to go along with a season-high eight assists and Green had 14 points and eight rebounds for Dallas, which shot 49 percent (42-of-85). Davis chipped in with 10 points.
