GAME RECAP

Shaquille O'Neal scored five of his 34 points in overtime and Eddie Jones hit a key three-pointer in the extra session as the Los Angeles Lakers remained unbeaten with a 109-100 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

After the Lakers rallied to tie the game on a runner from the right baseline by Nick Van Exel with 7.2 seconds left in regulation, O'Neal and Jones got them started in overtime.

O'Neal threw down a vicious dunk on San Antonio center David Robinson 25 seconds into overtime and was fouled. He made the free throw for a 99-96 advantage, but Robinson countered with two free throws 14 seconds later.

Jones buried a three-pointer and the Lakers' defense took over, holding San Antonio scoreless for nearly four minutes. Jones finished with 26 points for Los Angeles (6-0), which won for just the fifth time in its last 17 trips to San Antonio.

"You win games with defense. Offense is fun for the fans but to win a championship, you must win with defense," said Lakers coach Del Harris. "We were embarrassed at halftime when they shot 59 percent on us. They did a great a job of being a floor general and Eddie Jones hit some huge shots down the stretch."

"The team played well down the stretch," added O'Neal. "In the second half the Spurs were faster. We want to go down to Houston and play well but this was an emotional win for us. We just wanted to come out and play with a lot of poise and play well."

Robinson, who leads the league in scoring and has paced the team in each of its eight games, had 27 points. Rookie Tim Duncan, who missed a desperation three-pointer at the end of regulation, finished with 19.

"We hope it's a great matchup down the stretch this year," Duncan said of the Lakers' rivalry. "I think we match up well. We didn't execute down the stretch and their defense really picked it up."

The Spurs led 89-79 with 7:20 to play following a 14-foot jumper by Robinson. But Rick Fox countered with a three-pointer, Van Exel sank a free throw and O'Neal hit an 11-footer to draw Los Angeles within 89-85 with 5:57 to go.

The teams traded baskets and the Spurs had a 96-90 lead with 2:20 remaining. Van Exel made an 11-foot jumper and O'Neal hit a short basket and was fouled with 79 seconds left. He missed the free throw -- finishing 8-of-15 from the line -- but was bailed out when Van Exel hit his 20-footer.

The Spurs had a chance to win in the final seconds of regulation but had trouble running their offense. Duncan ended up with a 26-footer from the top of the key that was way off.

"We didn't get the ball where we wanted to get it but it was the right play for Tim Duncan," said Robinson. "He didn't get the ball where he could have made the shot. It wasn't his fault. Their defense was pretty good all night."

San Antonio, which lost for just the second time in eight games, made only 1-of-10 shots from the field in overtime.
