GAME RECAP

Horace Grant scored 21 points and Bo Outlaw added 18 as the Orlando Magic, playing without injured All-Star guard Penny Hardaway, cruised to a 103-85 victory over the Denver Nuggets, who matched the worst start in team history.

Orlando used a 20-2 run bridging the first and second quarters to open a 43-20 lead. Grant's 17-foot jumper and a layup by Outlaw gave the Magic a 30-18 edge after the first quarter. Rony Seikaly, who left the game in the third quarter with a neck strain, hit a hook shot with 8:06 left in the second period to cap the burst.

Nick Anderson, who finished with 16 points, scored eight in a row in the third quarter as Orlando built a 71-45 lead. With Hardaway outt, Anderson slid from forward to shooting guard and Outlaw was inserted at forward.

The win was the sixth straight at home for the Magic against Denver, which lost both matchups of this series last season.

"Well obviously it was a very good performance by everyone," Magic coach Chuck Daly said. "I think the guys knew that our leading scorer was out and everybody stepped up."

Hardaway also is expected to sit out Saturday's game against Washington with tendinitis in his left knee. He suffered the injury in Wednesday's 115-89 home loss to Sacramento.

"Historically when your best player is out, there is a certain amount of fear and people do not want to be embarrassed," Daly added. "I think they wanted to respond to what happened the other night. With the combination of those two things, I thought we would come out on fire."

Johnny Newman scored 23 points for the Nuggets (0-7), who also started the 1979 and 1990 seasons with seven consecutive defeats. Denver and Golden State (0-7) are the NBA's only winless teams.

"We can't worry about it, we just have to keep going," Newman said. "With a couple of wins, everything will turn right back around. It can go either way, like a swing. Right now it is going the other way and we need to keep plugging."

"Our youth is showing up," Nuggets coach Bill Hanzlik said. "I am not getting down on this team, no way. We are playing well. On a given day, we can beat any team. When we are not playing well, we are in trouble."

Rookie forward Tony Battie, one of the bright spots for the hapless Nuggets, scored 12 points before leaving the game early in the fourth quarter with an apparent leg injury.

Orlando's Mark Price, who scored nine of his 11 points in the opening quarter, capped a 7-2 spurt with a 19-foot jumper for a 15-8 lead midway through the first period. Derek Strong, who chipped in 14 points, hit a layup to spark a 7-0 spurt to close the first quarter.

"With Penny Hardaway out, and Derek Harper out, we just can't go out there, show up and win games," Price said. "So if you look at it that way, I thought it was a good win for us tonight."

Price's running jumper and a fast-break dunk by Grant opened the second half and sparked an 18-6 burst. After Newman's jumper, the run continued with back-to-back buckets by Grant and Outlaw and two free throws by Seikaly.

Outlaw finished with 11 rebounds, five assists and five steals for the Magic, who shot 53 percent (41-of-78) and have won three of their last four games.

"Bo brings a lot of energy always," Nuggets center Dean Garrett said. "That is what really sparkled and he just kept going the whole game."

Anderson, who pulled down nine rebounds, ended the run with three jumpers en route to a 71-45 lead. Denver got no closer than 18 points thereafter.

"The real Nick Anderson showed up -- unbelievable," Daly joked.

"When I hit those jump shots, I sat down in front of him (Daly). He said, 'Nice to meet you.' and he shook my hand," Anderson added.

The Nuggets shot 43 percent (33-of-77) from the field and were outrebounded, 45-32. They have failed to score more than 96 points in a game this season.
