GAME RECAP

Antoine Walker had 22 points, 18 rebounds and one big break on a shot that he missed in the final minute as the Boston Celtics held on for a 103-99 victory over the struggling Toronto Raptors and back-to-back wins for the first time in nearly 11 months.

A free throw by Reggie Slater pulled Toronto within 100-97 with 46 seconds left. Boston's Dee Brown missed a three-pointer, but Walker, surrounded by Raptors, grabbed the rebound and went up. His shot bounced around the rim for several seconds before teammate Travis Knight was whistled for offensive goaltending.

The violation -- called by the trail official at halfcourt -- was replayed on television monitors and clearly showed Knight had missed the ball. Instead of awarding possession to the Raptors, a jump ball was called for and Knight won it, giving the Celtics a new shot clock.

"Antoine Walker could have easily had a triple-double tonight if he had finished off his passes," said Boston coach Rick Pitino. "But he was just brilliant in every phase of the game."

"I was trying to be an inside presence tonight," explained Walker, who added five assists. "They are like us in the fact that they don't have a true center. I tried to take advantage of that using my quickness to grab rebounds."

But the game took a physical toll on the Celtics, who limp into Philadelphia on Saturday after injuries to rookie Ray Mercer and Bruce Bowen. Mercer, the sixth overall pick from Kentucky, has a sore hip and seven stitches above his left eye after a flagrant foul by Popeye Jones. On another flagrant foul, Bowen had his nose broken by Slater's elbow. However, neither player is expected to miss a game.

"I think it's a ridiculous rule in the NBA to call a flagrant-one and a flagrant-two," said Pitino. "What's ridiculous about the rule is obviously if you commit a flagrant foul, you should be penalized to the utmost of the rule whether it's a one, two or 10."

"I know a lot of guys on their team, they're in my age bracket," Walker said. "I don't think they were trying to foul us hard intentionally. Ron was going to dunk the ball and the guy challenged him."

Rookie Chauncey Billups added 22 points for the Celtics, who had not won two straight games since beating the Phoenix Suns and San Antonio Spurs on January 8th-12th of last season.

Walt Williams had 25 points and 12 rebounds for the Raptors, who have lost five in a row and all four road games.

Boston trailed 55-53 at halftime, but forged a tie early in the third quarter. Marcus Camby put Toronto ahead, 66-64, with a pair of free throws with six minutes left in the quarter, but Dana Barros drilled a three-pointer nine seconds later to give Boston the lead for good.

Barros, who scored 22 points off the bench, followed with another shot from behind the arc for a 70-66 edge. Boston hit 7-of-13 from three-point range, led by Billups' three.

Slater closed the Raptors to within 77-74 early in the fourth quarter, but Billups took over with six straight points. He drained a three-pointer 1:19 into the period, hit 1-of-2 from the line, then sank two more free throws to give the Celtics their largest lead, 83-74.

Slater had 17 points off the bench and Damon Stoudamire added 17 and nine assists for Toronto. Camby was held to 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting but blocked five shots.

"Tonight it was a combination of little things, like not boxing out," said Stoudamire. "There were breakdowns and it was a matter of not executing at the end. They had opportunities and made us pay. I'm frustrated. Right now I don't have any answers. You go out there and play hard and nothing happens for us, we have to fight through it."

Toronto threatened once more, pulling within 88-87 with 5:22 left on Shawn Respert's basket. But Walker's three-point play gave Boston enough breathing room to survive.
