GAME RECAP

Glen Rice scored 18 of his season-high 36 points in the first quarter as the Charlotte Hornets exploded for their fifth win in six games, a 130-96 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Rice, held to 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting in a loss at Chicago on Friday, bounced back with his best game of the season. The 1997 All-Star Game Most Valuable Player shot 13-of-19 from the field, victimizing Brent Barry and a handful of defenders.

"I came out in a rhythm," Rice said. "We wanted to come out and play aggressive and we played our game tonight. We're coming together. After last night, this is definitely what we wanted to do."

"Glen Rice is just an All-Star player," Clippers coach Bill Fitch said. "I didn't like the job that some of our players were doing on him, but even when you do like the jobs people do on him, he still has a big night."

Dell Curry scored 18 points and David Wesley added 15 and 10 assists for the Hornets, who established season highs in points, shooting percentage, assists and victory margin.

"Last night we got in too big a hole and couldn't get out of it," Curry said. "We came out tonight and beat a team we should have. We did exactly what we had to do."

Rodney Rogers scored 24 points for the Clippers, who have lost four in a row. Los Angeles has allowed at least 100 points in all but one of its losses.

The Hornets scored 21 of the first 25 points, quickly turning the game into a rout. Rice had two jumpers, a dunk, layup and free throw in the burst. His jumper made it 21-4 with 7:01 to go in the first quarter.

Rice added nine more points in the period, which ended with the Hornets holding a 41-30 lead. After a scoreless second quarter in which he played just two minutes, Rice caught fire again in the third period.

Rice scored six points as Charlotte maintained a double-digit lead. Two free throws by Stojko Vrankovic pulled Los Angeles within 79-67 with 4:36 to go in the period, but Anthony Mason scored six points and Rice five in a 17-5 spurt. A jumper by Corey Beck gave the Hornets a 96-72 lead just before the buzzer.

Rice scored seven more points early in the fourth quarter as Charlotte poured it on. The final margin was the largest lead.

"There isn't much to say about a game like that," Hornets coach Dave Cowens said. "We played an excellent game. We moved the ball exceptionally well. We got into our plays quickly and did a nice job on our pick-and-rolls."

Vlade Divac had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Matt Geiger added 11 and 10 for the Hornets, who shot 54 percent (51-of-94) and held a 51-34 edge on the glass. Charlotte had 38 assists and 14 turnovers.

Barry and Lorenzen Wright scored 12 points apiece for the Clippers, who shot 40.5 percent (30-of-74) and committed 20 turnovers.

"We hit bottom tonight," Fitch said. "We spotted them 12 right away. The half I can live with, but the game was over in the third quarter. The fourth quarter was just garbage. ... I don't think I have ever seen our team rebound less actively."
