GAME RECAP

Kevin Garnett scored 26 points and Tom Gugliotta and Stephon Marbury fueled a big first quarter as the Minnesota Timberwolves avenged a home loss to the San Antonio Spurs with a 105-94 victory, snapping a two-game losing streak.

Gugliotta had 23 points and 12 rebounds and Marbury added 19 points and seven assists. They combined for 22 points in the opening period, when the Timberwolves took the lead for good.

All-Star forwards Garnett and Gugliotta and center Cherokee Parks stood their ground against the "Twin Towers" of David Robinson and rookie Tim Duncan. Parks grabbed 10 rebounds as Minnesota's frontcourt combined for 54 points and 28 boards.

"I'm initiating the contact," Parks said. "We became effective when we were getting the rebounds and getting it in Marbury's hands. We controlled stuff a lot more tonight."

Robinson had 29 points and 18 rebounds and Duncan added 15 and 17. In a 93-92 win at Minnesota on Tuesday, Robinson and Duncan combined for 58 points and 25 boards and Robinson made a tip-in at the buzzer.

"We did a good job last game (Tuesday)," Marbury said. "We got beat on the rebounds but we wanted it a lot more tonight. Tonight we were more focused on our rebounds because we were beaten because of that the last time. We saw that they were kind of relaxed and we took it to 'em."

"The second half, we got a little tired," said Robinson, who was 8-of-20 from the field. "They made big shots throughout the game and they played well together."

Minnesota took the lead for good at 21-19 on a layup by Marbury with 4 1/2 minutes left in the first quarter. After Marbury hit a free throw, Gugliotta scored five straight Wolves points and Sam Mitchell followed with six in a row as Minnesota opened a 33-26 lead after one quarter.

A 20-footer by Terry Porter capped a 12-4 burst that widened the lead to 49-34 with 5:47 left in the second quarter. Until a basket by Duncan with about four minutes to go, the Spurs went seven minutes with no points from anyone but Robinson.

Minnesota led 61-48 at halftime. A short jumper by Marbury and a dunk by Chris Carr built the advantage to 17 points in the first minute of the third quarter and Carr's two free throws gave the Wolves their largest lead at 83-64 with 1:48 left in the period.

Robinson and Duncan received very little help and the Spurs got no closer than the final margin, dropping their second straight game at home.

Carr scored 14 points and Mitchell 10 for the Wolves, who shot under 38 percent (33-of-87) from the field and battled the Spurs to a 54-54 draw on the boards. Minnesota committed just five turnovers.

"We knew if we were competitive on the boards that we would be in the game tonight," Carr said.

Sean Elliott scored 12 points and Jaren Jackson added 10 for San Antonio, which also shot under 39 percent (29-of-75). Elliott (4-of-13) and Chuck Person (2-of-13) combined to shoot 6-of-26 from the field.

"We have to execute our offense extremely well," Robinson said. "We have to make the right cuts and right picks to assure that everything will go well. We have to get back on the winning track and we have to understand that we have a lot of work to do. Every game has to be crucial for us. We need to realize that."

There were 65 fouls called, 34 on San Antonio. Minnesota was 38-of-48 from the line and San Antonio was 32-of-51. Robinson and Duncan missed five foul shots apiece.

The Wolves are 9-31 all-time against the Spurs but have won five of the last six meetings.
