GAME RECAP

Karl Malone scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, leading the Utah Jazz to their third straight victory, 85-77 over the Dallas Mavericks, who suffered their fifth straight loss.

Malone scored 12 points in the third quarter as the Jazz won for the fourth time in five games. Utah opened its season by dropping three of its first four games.

Greg Foster added 10 points and Jeff Hornacek dished out 10 assists for the defending Western Conference champions.

Michael Finley led the Mavericks with 21 points, while A.C. Green contributed 13 and 10 rebounds. Dallas opened with three straight wins, but has not won since.

Bryon Russell's dunk with 8:23 remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Jazz their biggest lead, 73-60, but the Mavericks rallied to get back in the game.

Dallas went on a 11-2 run over the next five minutes, capped by Shawn Bradley's three-point play, to pull within 75-71 with 3:07 to play. Bradley finished with 11 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks.

But Malone, who matched his season-high in points, put away the game with a layup and jumper for a 79-71 advantage with 1:56 to go.

"Early in the game it looked like we were going to be able to play them decent, but then we quit executing," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "They kept coming at us. We had to make a couple of shots to win it."

Malone connected on 12-of-20 shots for the Jazz, who shot 46 percent (36-for-78) from the field. Dallas shot only 39 percent (29-of-75) from the floor.

"I think our defense was really good," Malone said. "Anytime you start doing that you give yourself a chance to win. When we started off the season we didn't do those things. Now all of a sudden, we're giving ourselves the opportunity to win."

The Jazz held a 50-45 lead with 8:50 remaining in the third quarter before Malone scored 10 points, including eight straight in a 12-5 burst which gave the Jazz a 62-50 cushion with 3:20 to go in the period.

Foster and Malone scored six points apiece in the first quarter as the Jazz led 22-17. Shandon Anderson's dunk at the 9:34 mark of the second quarter extended the advantage to 30-18.

But Finley scored 14 points in the first half, keeping the Mavs within striking distance. Dallas trailed 41-36 at the half.

"We have played well and there is definitely some growth taking place here," Dallas coach Jim Cleamons said. "Now we need to get on an even keel and work on all cylinders. We're just trying to find some rhythm as a team."
