GAME RECAP

Lindsey Hunter scored 11 of his career-high 35 points in overtime as the Detroit Pistons, playing without a flu-ridden Grant Hill, beat the New Jersey Nets for the 10th straight time, 96-88.

Hunter, who played a career-high 53 minutes, scored the first four points of the extra session to stake the Pistons to an 83-79 lead.

"Believe me, I'm feeling all 53 of those minutes," Hunter said. "I knew I'd play a lot tonight and I figured there was a chance I'd play the whole game, but I hadn't been planning on overtime."

Kendall Gill's jumper with 2:46 left pulled the Nets within 85-83, but Detroit reeled off the next eight points. Hunter started the run with a layup and Brian Williams, who had 21 points and 12 boards, highlighted the spurt with a three-point play.

Hunter, who added seven rebounds and five assists, sank two free throws with 43 seconds remaining to give Detroit a 93-83 cushion.

Malik Sealy added 22 points for the Pistons, who have won two of their last three games following a five-game losing streak.

A pair of free throws by Hunter gave the Pistons a 79-76 lead with 35 seconds left in regulation, but Sam Cassell hit the game-tying three-pointer just eight seconds later.

"Sam Cassell hit that three right in my face to send it into overtime so I really wanted to step up and win the game," Hunter said.

Cassell, whose status for this game had been uncertain due to a respiratory disorder, registered 29 points and eight assists. The Nets, who have not beaten Detroit since February 6th, 1995, dropped their third straight game after starting the season at 4-0.

Despite giving up the game-tying shot, Hunter was a defensive burden on Cassell, especially in the second half. Cassell scored just six points after halftime and committed seven turnovers, including one in overtime off a steal by Hunter.

"Lindsey's leadership is fabulous and so was his defense in the second half," Pistons coach Doug Collins said. "I challenged someone to step up and play Cassell, and Hunter did a great job against him. He played all 53 minutes and gave us some big shots."

The Nets led through most of the contest and owned a 73-67 edge midway through the final period, but Detroit used a 12-3 spurt to take the lead. Williams, who had six points in the first three quarters, scored 11 in the final frame to help put the Pistons back in it.

"I came out in the fourth quarter and thought it was going to happen now," Williams said. "I helped exorcise the demons for all of us."

New Jersey had a chance to win it in regulation after Jayson Williams stole an inbounds pass, but Cassell and Michael Cage missed inside shots in the waning seconds.

"This was a tough one, a tough loss. That is a game that is hard for me to swallow," Nets coach John Calipari said. "What was disappointing was not finishing the game. We got sloppy with the ball and we just weren't making the plays."

This was the first game in a week for Nets guard Kerry Kittles, who had been sidelined for all but one game this season with a strained groin. He started and played 40 minutes, scoring 16 points on just 5-of-21 shooting from the field.

"We were just out of sync in the second half, especially down the stretch," Kittles said. "Lindsey came out and did what he needed to do. He carried his team."

Gill scored 19 points and Jayson Williams added 13 and 18 boards but the Nets were still outrebounded, 43-36.
