GAME RECAP

Allan Houston, Charlie Ward and Patrick Ewing keyed a pivotal third-quarter run and John Starks scored 13 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter as the New York Knicks used a huge second half to rout the road-weary Sacramento Kings, 114-87.

Houston had six of his 14 points during an 18-7 run that opened the second half. The burst, which featured four points apiece by Ward and Ewing, turned a 52-46 halftime lead into a 17-point advantage.

"I think this was a team that was playing well and I am pleased that we were able to come out in the third quarter with a lot of energy," said Houston. "We kept them down when we had to."

The victory marked the fourth time this season that New York has won by at least 20 points. They had just four such triumphs last season. Eight Knicks scored in double figures as New York avenged a loss at Sacramento six days ago.

New York, which was 0-for-12 from three-point range in that loss to the Kings, made 6-of-10 from beyond the arc and 26-of-28 from the free throw line. Ewing finished with 17 points and Ward had 11.

"They came out and played us tough in Sacramento," Starks said. "We had a chance to put them away and never did. Today we took the opportunity to put them away. I think this team is starting to get that killer instinct now."

"I was very pleased with our effort. We came out with a lot of intensity, especially in the third quarter," said Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy. "We are really starting to play well as a unit. I am very pleased with our second unit."

Mitch Richmond, the subject of Knicks trade rumors, led the Kings with 18 points. Sacramento was outrebounded 43-23, establishing a franchise low for fewest rebounds. The Kings -- whose roots can be traced to the Rochester Royals, an original NBA franchise -- had a previous low of 24 rebounds against the Los Angeles Clippers on April 11th, 1995.

"I thought we took some tough shots and it goes back to some guys thinking they have to do it on their own," Kings coach Eddie Jordan said. "Sometimes that is human nature but we shouldn't have to play like that to get back in the game."

"I felt we played pretty well in the first quarter and then we let them get back into it," Richmond said.

The Knicks have won 14 of the last 18 meetings with Sacramento, which was playing its fourth road game in five nights.

Houston began the key second-half burst with a layup to open the third quarter and capped the run with a driving layup with 5:34 to go in the period. Houston finished with eight points in the period and Ward added seven.

New York, which set a season high for points, had held its opponent under 100 points in each of its nine games.
