GAME RECAP

Hakeem Olajuwon scored 24 points and fueled a decisive fourth-quarter run as the Houston Rockets snapped a four-game losing streak with a 95-84 victory over the New York Knicks.

The Rockets trailed 71-69 midway through the final frame when Olajuwon hit a 15-foot jumper and fed Rodrick Rhodes for a basket. Patrick Ewing, who scored just 12 points, answered with a jumper, but Houston took the lead for good with a 15-2 run.

Olajuwon scored four points and Kevin Willis added a jumper in that spurt. Willis finished with 17 points and nine rebounds in place of All-Star forward Charles Barkley, who missed his first game of the season with a strained left groin.

"It was good to get a win where everyone contributed," Olajuwon said. "It was a very nice victory over a quality team."

Matt Maloney added a season-high 23 points, one off his career best, and sank five free throws as Houston reeled off nine straight points to take an 88-75 lead with 1:27 to play.

"We knew it was going to be a war tonight," said Maloney, who scored 14 points in the first quarter. "I was looking to score a little more. I felt good early on and the shots were falling."

"I think we're all frustrated with our inability to play well in the fourth quarter on both ends," Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "We did not start off well defensively. Maloney got off early and had some open looks."

John Starks scored a season-high 29 points for the Knicks, who had their three-game winning streak snapped and lost for just the second time in the last seven meetings with Houston.

With the game knotted at 73-73, Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler each hit a pair of free throws before a jumper by Willis gave the Rockets a 79-73 edge with 3:22 to play.

Starks answered with two free throws before Houston went on the 9-0 run. Maloney was fouled on a three-pointer and sank all three free throws before Olajuwon capped the spurt with a jumper, increasing the Rockets' lead to 88-75. New York got no closer than nine points thereafter.

"I was very pleased with our execeution in the fourth quarter," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "The Knicks are one of the better teams in the NBA, but we hit some big shots and made some key defensive plays down the stretch. That is the old Rocket basketball."

Drexler contributed 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals for Houston (4-5), which is still off to its worst start since opening the 1983-84 season at 3-7.

The Knicks' Larry Johnson fouled out with seven points and 10 rebounds. He made just 1-of-9 shots as New York connected on 37 percent (28-of-76) from the field.

"Unfortunately, there are going to be nights like this," Johnson said. "Offensively, I struggled and other guys struggled, too."

Olajuwon, who had eight rebounds and three blocks, hit 10-of-14 from the floor. But the Houston bench shot a combined 2-of-12 for six points and the Rockets were good on just 39 percent (28-of-72) from the field.

The Rockets scored the final 12 points of the second quarter to take a 48-42 halftime lead. Olajuwon hit three jumpers during that stretch, the last of which capped the spurt with six seconds left.

The Knicks limited Houston to just 12 points in the third quarter in taking a 61-60 lead heading into the final quarter. Starks scored 12 points in the final frame, but Ewing managed just one bucket.
