GAME RECAP

Stephon Marbury scored 12 of his 23 points in the final 5 1/2 minutes as the Minnesota Timberwolves posted their second straight convincing road win with a 108-90 victory over the Phoenix Suns.

Kevin Garnett had 26 points and nine rebounds and Tom Gugliotta added 20 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for Minnesota, which won by 11 points at San Antonio on Saturday. Marbury and Garnett combined for all the points in a clinching 12-0 burst.

At 6-3, the Timberwolves are three games above .500 for just the second time in franchise history. They visit the unbeaten Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday.

Kevin Johnson scored 27 points and Danny Manning added 20 and 11 rebounds for the Suns (6-2), who had matched their best start in 17 years. Both of their losses have come at home.

After climbing into the lead in the third quarter, Minnesota took control in the final period. An 18-footer by Manning pulled the Suns within 85-83, but Marbury made a three-pointer with 5:13 to go.

Manning made a short jumper, but Marbury's layup triggered the 12-0 burst. Garnett scored and Marbury made two free throws for a 94-85 lead with 3:50 remaining. Garnett sank an eight-footer and Marbury made consecutive layups, pushing the lead to 100-85 with 1:59 to play.

Chris Carr scored 13 points for the Wolves, who shot 57.5 percent (42-of-73) from the field and held a 44-37 rebounding advantage.

Rex Chapman scored 19 points for the Suns, who shot 44 percent (36-of-82) but just 4-of-20 from three-point range. Forward Antonio McDyess was held to four points and guard Jason Kidd had just five.

Johnson's nine second-quarter points gave the Suns a 50-44 lead at halftime. Chapman's 15-footer extended the advantage to 54-46 with 10:46 left in the third quarter.

But The Wolves responded with a 9-2 run, sparked by four points by Gugliotta. A three-point play by Cherokee Parks cut it to 56-55 with 9:08 left in the period.

Marbury's three-pointer tied it and two free throws by Parks gave the Wolves the lead for good at 66-64 with five minutes to go. Garnett's two foul shots extended the lead to 73-66 with two minutes left in the period.
