GAME RECAP

Chris Gatling returned from an ankle sprain to key a third-quarter run with his jump-shooting and Sam Cassell scored 14 points during the pivotal quarter to lead the New Jersey Nets to a 108-100 victory over the Boston Celtics.

Gatling missed a pair of games with the injury but showed no rust, sinking four clutch jumpers during a 20-3 run that brought back the Nets from a 12-point hole. His 16-footer with 2:33 left in the period capped the burst and put New Jersey ahead for good, 80-79.

"I was kind of a little timid when I first came out there cause of my ankle," said Gatling. "But then after I got it going, you know I just tried to give the guys lift, that's what I'm really here to do."

The 30-year-old Gatling, the second-leading scorer and rebounder on the club, finished with 17 points -- 13 in the second half -- and 10 rebounds. Jayson Williams led the way with season-high 27 and 13.

"What I try to do is go in and pick up the offense," Williams said. "If I start swarming and running around like crazy, like a chicken with its head cut off, then everybody else will follow my example, and that's what they did."

Cassell was held in check through the first half with only one field goal, but exploded with 10 of the Nets' first 12 points of the third quarter. He also capped the big run at 84-79, hitting a pair form the line after Boston coach Rick Pitino was ejected for arguing.

"It was a game we really wanted," Cassell said. "We made some big shots and got some big boards. Us coming back is a sign of a good team."

Antoine Walker scored 21 points but also was ejected with 11:33 to go for elbowing Gatling in the face. Walter McCarty added 18 and 10 rebounds for the Celtics, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.

"The way it looked I think they should have thrown me out," admitted Walker. "(But) it looked worse than what it really was. There was a little bit of a flop job at the end."

New Jersey kept up the pressure in the fourth quarter, reeling off the first five points to build an 89-81 cushion. Pervis Ellison hit a layup halfway through the quarter as Boston climbed within 91-87, but New Jersey's 10-4 run put them away for good.

"We didn't match up physically," Pitino said. "They overpowered us and beat us in the lane. We're not a physical team. You look at Travis Knight, Walter McCarty and Pervis Ellison, that doesn't conjure up images of the Oakland Raiders in their prime."

Cassell finished with 20 points, Kerry Kittles added 12 and Sherman Douglas chipped in 12 and six assists off the bench.

The Nets shot 49 percent (38-of-78) from the field, but just 55 percent (31-of-56) from the line. Gatling, who entered hitting just 38 percent from the line this season, was the biggest offender, missing 7-of-10 attempts.

Dee Brown scored 16 points -- 11 in the first quarter -- and Knight added 16 and seven rebounds for the Celtics, who hit 43 percent (36-of-84) of their shots.

Leading 36-32, the Celtics used a 13-7 burst to take their biggest lead to that point, 49-39, with 4:17 left in the second quarter. But Kendall Gill dunked and Gatling hit 2-of-4 free throws on consecutive fouls to narrow the deficit. Boston went on to take a 56-52 run into the half.
