GAME RECAPGary Payton scored 31 points and handed out 11 assists and Detlef Schrempf added 23 and nine as the Seattle SuperSonics remained perfect at home against the Vancouver Grizzlies with a 107-87 shellacking.
Payton had 11 points in the opening quarter as the SuperSonics charged out to a 38-15 lead before sending the Grizzlies to their fifth straight loss in Seattle. He hit 11-of-22 shots and had just two turnovers in 43 minutes.
Vancouver trailed by as many as 25 before narrowing the gap to 84-80 on rookie Antonio Daniels' jumper with 6:33 remaining. But Payton drained a three-pointer and Vin Baker followed with a follow shot to give Seattle a nine-point cushion.
"We were struggling at the time and I knew that I had to do something to drain the ball," said Payton. "I just concentrated, got my legs into it, and hit the jumper."
"We had a great effort to get back to 84-80, but then we didn't do anything at the offensive end of the floor," said Grizzlies coach Brian Hill. "Every time we turned it over it led to a fast break for them."
Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 25 points and Blue Edwards added 14 as the Grizzlies committed 24 turnovers while falling to 1-5 on the road.
"We didn't execute down the stretch," conceded Abdur-Rahim. "I think we got the game back to where we could do something, but we just didn't do a good job of executing down the stretch."
The SuperSonics had 13 turnovers while converting Vancouver's giveaways into 33 points.
Leading 17-9 midway through the first quarter, Seattle pulled away with a 19-4 run keyed by Payton's five points and four from Baker. They built the lead as large as 25 points on Dale Ellis' jumper early in the second en route to a 56-40 halftime edge.
"We'll get there with the killer instinct," said Baker. "I think it's there, but we just haven't gotten it yet. I think that's part of the chemistry that we have to build."
The Sonics shot 46 percent (42-of-91) from the field -- including 8-of-17 from three-point range -- to improve to 5-1 at home.
Baker had 15 points and seven rebounds and Ellis hit 5-of-6 shots off the bench for 11 points but Jerome Kersey missed all nine of his shots from the field.
The Grizzlies shot 44 percent (32-of-73) from the floor, getting 13 points from Daniels and eight off the bench from George Lynch.
