GAME RECAP

Kevin Johnson scored six of his 16 points during a crucial 10-2 run late in the fourth quarter as the Phoenix Suns posted an 89-85 victory over the defending champion Chicago Bulls, who remained winless on the road this season.

Johnson, who came off the bench because coach Danny Ainge felt it would give him better defensive matchups, hit consecutive long jumpers midway through the period to ignite the burst. He added another basket before Danny Manning capped the run, giving Phoenix an 84-77 lead with 3:38 to go.

Manning finished with 23 points for Phoenix, which has won five of its last six games. Jason Kidd added eight points, 11 assists and six rebounds for the Suns.

Phoenix led 86-79 with 68 seconds left, but Toni Kukoc hit consecutive three-pointers to draw the Bulls within a point. Rex Chapman missed a three-pointer with 35 seconds to go but Chicago blew a golden opportunity to take the lead.

Michael Jordan got inside with 20 seconds to go, but instead of taking the ball up strong, dished it to Dennis Rodman, who missed the easy layup. Chapman was fouled with 12.7 seconds remaining and made only one free throw. But Jordan failed to capitalize, missing a jumper from the top of the circle with 5.9 seconds left. Manning made two free throws to seal the win.

"I was very happy with the game, other than the two Kukoc three-pointers," Ainge said. "I thought we let down our guard just enough. The two threes kept them in the game. Our execution was a little sloppy, but a lot of that had to do with Chicago's defense. Danny Manning carried us offensively throughout the entire game and KJ hit two huge jumpers when we were struggling."

"That was a disappointing loss for us because we struggled back to have a chance to win the game," Bulls coach Phil Jackson said. "We did everything right except put the ball in the basket. I didn't think we played well enough during the course of the game to have the opportunity to win, but the Suns kept letting us back in the ballgame. We played poorly and very sloppy."

Jordan finished with 30 points and Ron Harper added 14, but the Bulls, starting a seven-game road trip, fell to 0-4 away from home this season. Chicago did not lose more than two straight road games at any point last season.

"Obviously we got out of rhythm, turned the ball over a lot and missed a lot of easy shots," Jordan said. "It's not like we didn't have an opportunity. We missed an easy layup and my shot goes in and out at the end."

"I just missed a layup. What else can I say? I lost the game for us," said Rodman. "I wasn't expecting the pass but I'm supposed to make the basket. I missed two free throws and I missed a layup. I'll carry the weight, I lost it."

Recently signed Rusty LaRue hit a short jumper with 6:26 to go in the fourth to give Chicago a 75-74 lead. But Johnson responded with a 15-footer with 6:09 left to give Phoenix the lead for good. He then buried an 18-footer with 5:41 left for a three-point lead. Cliff Robinson made it six straight points with a fastbreak layup that pushed the Suns lead to 80-75.

Rodman hit a layup with 4:50 remaining to temporarily halt the run but Johnson hit a basket and Manning sank a 19-footer for an 84-77 advantage with 3:38 left.

"It was an ugly ballgame and that's what can happen when you play Chicago," Johnson said. "The whole style you can't really get in the flow. But it's what happens down the stretch. Minnesota beat us down the stretch the other night. Tonight we were able to hit some shots and get a big enough cushion to hold them off."
