GAME RECAP

Mitch Richmond scored 22 points and Lawrence Funderburke added 10 in the fourth quarter as the Sacramento Kings snapped a 14-game losing streak against the Utah Jazz with a 97-95 victory.

Funderburke went 6-for-6 from the foul line in the final period and Corliss Williamson finished with 16 points and nine rebounds for the Kings, who defeated Utah for the first time since February 18th, 1994.

"I thank God that I was able to knock them down calmly," said Funderburke. "That's the big thing -- not to go up there and think about them. You just go up there and make the play."

Rookie Anthony Johnson's three-pointer early in the fourth quarter gave Sacramento an 83-73 lead, but the Jazz whittled away. Utah trailed by two points and had the ball with 10 seconds left. But after a timeout, Howard Eisley missed a foul-line jumper to end the game.

"When you've got people who aren't competing, then it's tough for whoever's playing out there," said Utah coach Jerry Sloan. "When the Kings set a screen on us, we looked like a dishrag, we just kind of folded up and fell on the floor."

Karl Malone scored 32 points after being held without a field goal in the first quarter and Jeff Hornacek added 17 for the Jazz (5-6), who did not suffer their sixth loss last season until December 23rd.

Eisley scored 17 points and eight assists and Shandon Anderson added 10 off the bench for Utah, which shot 44 percent (34-of-77) from the floor.

Billy Owens fouled out 2 1/2 minutes into the fourth quarter with 13 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds for the Kings. Terry Dehere added 14 points and Olden Polynice chipped in with nine for Sacramento, which shot 52 percent (39-of-75) from the field.

"We could play better, that's a very strong team in Utah," said Kings coach Eddie Jordan. "They came back after being down by 18 points, you got to have a lot of respect for that. They made this a tough game."

The Kings' foul-shooting nearly cost them the game, but Funderburke lifted them to 8-of-10 from the line in the fourth quarter. Overall, Sacramento hit just 16-of-28 foul shots while the Jazz, led by Hornacek's 11-of-12 effort, shot 76 percent (25-of-33) from the stripe.

Malone was held to just eight points in the first half before exploding for 16 in the third quarter. Richmond gave the Kings their biggest lead, 52-34, with a basket early in the third quarter.

Malone caught fire with 5:40 left, hitting a 17-footer, a dunk and a jumper in succession to pace the Jazz on a 17-5 run that pulled them within 75-69 after three quarters.

Antoine Carr's jumper early in the fourth quarter narrowed the deficit to 77-73, but Sacramento regained control on consecutive three-pointers from Richmond and Johnson.

"A key section there was when we got them down to four early in the fourth quarter," said Hornacek. "We didn't get a couple of key rebounds. Richmond hit a three, and then the other guy, whats-his-name (Johnson), hit a three. Back-to-back threes put them up by 10."

"If you don't cover guys, they are going to make shots," Anderson said. "We gave them good shots and they made them. They did the things they had to do to win the game coming down the stretch."

The Jazz (5-6) are off to their worst after 11 games since beginning 4-7 in 1982-83. They last went 5-6 in the 1990-91 season.
