GAME RECAP

Antoine Walker had 24 points, 12 rebounds and five assists as the Boston Celtics used a balanced attack in a 101-93 victory over the New Jersey Nets for a split of their home-and-home series.

Tyus Edney and Greg Minor each scored 12 points off the bench for the Celtics, who overcame a 15-point second-quarter deficit en route to their fifth win in six games. Boston had points from all 12 players in a game that featured 70 fouls and took two hours and 32 minutes. Substitute Ron Mercer scored 11 points for Boston, which shot 89 percent (33-for-37) from the free-throw line.

"I think Pervis Ellison was a big catalyst for our comeback," said Boston coach Rick Pitino about his backup center, who had five blocked shots, four steals and four points in 14 minutes. "When things weren't going well he made the defensive plays that allowed us to stay in the hunt. After the first quarter it was fun. We came back and tied it up at halftime with shades of Tyus at the NCAA tournament. He does that all the time. Tonight we won it with halfcourt defense and backboard work."

Boston outrebounded New Jersey, 42-38.

Chris Gatling had 22 points and eight rebounds while Sam Cassell and Kendall Gill each scored 12 points for the Nets, who had won five consecutive meetings against Boston since April 19th, 1996.

"We have very talented players that, if they play together, are good," said New Jersey coach John Calipari. "If they fight each other like tonight we're not. Give (Boston) credit, they did a great job of holding on to win. They settled down when we got crazy and they took advantage. We didn't play team `D' tonight. We broke down in a lot of ways."

Gatling's dunk gave the Nets their biggest lead, 31-16, with 7:34 to go in the second. But Dana Barros and Andrew DeClercq each had six points as Boston outscored New Jersey the rest of the period, 31-16, to tie the game at halftime, 47-47.

Walker's three-pointer in the middle of a 10-0 run put the Celtics ahead for good, 54-41, with 9:38 remaining in the third quarter. Walker also sank a pair of free throws to cap the run for a 59-51 advantage with 7:12 left.

"We struggled in the beginning but we came out on fire in the second quarter," Walker said. "Pervis played great and helped us out a lot. We're a special team, every time someone came in tonight we got a lift and that's why we won. We're both two young teams and the coaches have rivalries from UMass and Kentucky. We want to make our own rivalry just like the Lakers and Celtics used to have."

Boston built the lead up to 81-69 when Edney made a layup with 7:19 left in the fourth. New Jersey came as close as 87-82 when Sherman Douglas hit a pair of free throws with 2:23 to go. But Mercer and Edney followed with consecutive pairs of free throws and the Nets did not come closer then six points the rest of the way.

Gatling scored nine points as the Nets took a 21-10 lead after the opening period. New Jersey's final lead of the game was 51-49, when Gill made a layup with 11:14 left in the third.
