GAME RECAP

Michael Jordan made a spectacular play off his own missed free throw to send the game to double overtime and scored all nine points in the second extra session as the Chicago Bulls defeated the Los Angeles Clippers, 111-102.

Jordan finished with an NBA season-high 49 points, including 40 in the second half and overtime, as the Bulls posted their first road win this season. He scored 13 straight points bridging the first and second overtimes as Chicago snapped a six-game road losing streak dating back to last season.

"It is important to get the win on the road," Jordan said. "Every team is playing us hard and we have had the opportunities to win all the games except the one in Cleveland."

The Clippers led 102-100 and had the ball with 20.5 seconds left in the first overtime but committed a backcourt violation following a timeout. Jordan was fouled with 15.7 seconds to go but missed the first free throw. His second attempt was strong off the back of the rim and he sliced his way to the rebound. Jordan drew the ball out to the top of the key, beat Brent Barry and lofted a layup off the glass for the tying basket with 8.9 seconds remaining.

Pooh Richardson had a chance to win it as time expired in the extra session but his scoop shot from the top of the key barely hit the front of the rim.

In double overtime, Jordan was dominant as Chicago held the Clippers without a point. He opened the period with a long jumper from the left corner and converted a layup into a three-point play with 3:23 to go. He added a pull-up jumper before capping his night with two free throws.

It was his 150th career 40-point effort and extended the Bulls' winning streak against the Clippers to five games. Luc Longley added a career-high 22 points for Chicago, which has won eight straight games at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

"We got new life," said Bulls coach Phil Jackson of the backcourt violation. "It was a rookie mistake by a veteran. We struggled in the first half and Michael Jordan could not buy a shot. Luc kept us in the game."

"I am shooting the ball well and getting a lot of good shots," said Longley. "I am feeling good about it. My legs felt fresh but not towards the end. That was a long way to play and it makes it a lot easier when you win."

Lamond Murray had 24 points and Barry added 17 for the Clippers, who have dropped eight straight games overall.

"There are no morale victories," Murray said. "I wanted a victory and we tried our hardest but I made a mental mistake to keep them in the game. I admit it, it was just a bad decision on my part."

"The only thing we could get out of this was a win," Clippers coach Bill Fitch said. "They are still the World Champions and they showed they had the character to win. There are no fingers to point, it is a game we all have to think about."

A pair of free throws by Barry gave Los Angeles an 88-87 lead with 90 seconds left but Jordan responded by draining a 15-footer from the right wing with 1:17 remaining. After Rodney Rogers missed a short layup in the lane, Longley grabbed the rebound.

Jordan hit a fadaway jumper near the right baseline to give Chicago a 91-88 advantage with 33 seconds left. But Rogers made a quick basket in the lane and the Clippers fouled Jordan with 15 seconds to go. He made 1-of-2 free throws and the Clippers capitalized when Jordan fouled Barry with 10.5 seconds to go.

Barry made both free throws as Los Angles knotted the contest, 92-92. Chicago had a chance to win at the end of regulation but Jordan's fadeaway jumper from the free throw line hit the back of the rim.

"I have had some wrist problems and sometimes I think about the pain as I flick it," Jordan added. "I'm not concentrating on the shot like I should. Consequently I am shortchanging my jump shot and I am flat on the free throws."

The overtime opened with a driving layup by Toni Kukoc but an illegal defense technical brought the Clippers within a point. After Barry sank the free throw, Los Angeles inbounded and Murray hit a jumper from the top of the circle for a 95-94 lead. Lorenzen Wright's putback of a Pooh Richardson miss pushed the lead to three.

Kukoc made a free throw with 2:23 left to get Chicago within a basket and Jordan tied it with a soft jumper with 1:10 to play in the extra session. Murray easily beat Kukoc off the dribble for a driving layup and was fouled. After the free throw gave the Clippers a three-point lead, Chicago got a free throw from Luc Longley to cut the deficit to 100-98.

Keith Closs sank a pair of free throws to push Los Angeles' lead to 102-98 but Jordan began to heat up with a jumper from the left baseline.

The Bulls, who were playing their second double overtime game of the month, have won five straight overtime games dating back to March 19th, 1995 against Indiana -- Jordan's first game back after his short retirement. Los Angeles was playing its first overtime game of the season.

The Clippers led by as many as 18 points in the second quarter.
