GAME RECAP

Wesley Person scored 12 of his 22 points in a pivotal third-quarter run as the Cleveland Cavaliers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 103-80 rout of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Cleveland had a 53-43 halftime lead when Person's layup sparked an 18-6 burst to open the third quarter. He drained a pair of three-pointers during the run before capping it with two free throws to build a 71-49 advantage with 5:57 left in the period.

"We wanted to come out quick tonight," Person said. "We're a young team and after our loss to Orlando, we needed to come out and stop this (losing) streak."

Minnesota, which suffered its third straight home loss, got no closer than 17 points the rest of the way and set a season low for points.

Rookie Cedric Henderson had a career-high 19 points and Shawn Kemp contributed 19 and eight rebounds for the Cavaliers, who reached the century mark for just the second time this season. Cleveland has held opponents under 100 points in every game.

Chris Carr scored 19 points and Kevin Garnett added 18 for the Timberwolves, who have lost five straight and 12 of the last 13 meetings with the Cavs.

"Teams will have off nights," Carr said. "We just have to bounce back and do whatever it takes. We come back with practice tomorrow and if we go out to Utah and get a win, everybody will be smiling."

Cleveland raced to a 19-4 lead after scoring the first eight points of the game. Tom Gugliotta scored nine of his 17 points in the opening period to help Minnesota trim the deficit, but Kemp scored 10 in the quarter as Cleveland took a 27-21 lead.

Minnesota came back to tie the game, 41-41, on Carr's fast-break dunk with 3:36 left in the second quarter. But rookie Brevin Knight sank a 15-foot jumper, sparking the Cavs' 12-2 run to end the period. Henderson scored five points in the spurt before Person's two free throws gave Cleveland a 53-43 edge.

Knight atoned for his seven turnovers by recording a career-high 13 assists. He added nine points, eight rebounds and five steals and Vitaly Potapenko chipped in with 18 points off the bench for Cleveland, which shot 52 percent (39-of-75) from the field.

"Potapenko and Henderson should get new contracts for the way we played them tonight," Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders joked. "Their agents should be on the phone right now."

Minnesota never led and trailed 81-56 heading into the final frame after scoring just 13 points in the third quarter, a season low for one period.

Gugliotta contributed eight rebounds and six assists and Garnett pulled down seven boards, but the third member of the Timberwolves' young and talented trio had one of his worst nights as a pro. Point guard Stephon Marbury was 0-of-8 from the field, committed seven turnovers and finished with just four points and three assists.

"You don't play Stephon (Marbury) by yourself. He (Brevin Knight) needed help from a lot of people tonight and he got it," Cavs coach Mike Fratello said. "Stephon struggled a little tonight. But he's had so many great games, this is just one night."

Marbury missed four three-point attempts and Minnesota was just 1-of-11 from behind the arc en route to a season-low 33 field goals in 80 attempts (41 percent). The Wolves made just 13-of-24 free throws while committing 22 turnovers.

"As disappointing a performance as we have had since I have been here," Saunders said. "We played extremely selfish offensively. ... We've been very good defensively and tonight we laid an egg."
