GAME RECAP

Chris Gatling registered 23 points and 10 rebounds and made two crucial defensive plays in the final 28 seconds, leading the New Jersey Nets to a 93-87 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Two free throws by Gatling tied the game, 85-85, with 1:03 left before Portland's Arvydas Sabonis answered with a follow dunk. Sam Cassell had 17 points and 13 assists and fed Jayson Williams for his driving three-point play that put New Jersey in front with 28 seconds remaining.

Gatling stole Rasheed Wallace's inbounds pass at midcourt, which led to Kendall Gill hitting 1-of-2 from the foul line for an 89-87 edge with 18 seconds to go. Former Net Kenny Anderson, who scored 20 points but was jeered by the Continental Airlines Arena crowd throughout the game, drove the lane and Gatling blocked his shot. Cassell sank two free throws before Gill, who scored 19 points, capped the victory with a dunk in the waning seconds.

"You see what we did when we pray together, play hard and scrap," said Gatling, who was just 5-of-12 from the foul line. "We're as competitive as any team in the league. We share the wealth."

"All he needs to do is make his free throws, and he could be the leading scorer in the league," Nets coach John Calipari said.

Williams contributed 15 points and 11 rebounds as New Jersey snapped a three-game losing streak against Portland and improved to 7-4, its best start since the 1978-79 season.

Sabonis scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half and grabbed 13 rebounds for Portland, which fell to 5-2 on the road. Stacey Augmon had 16 points but was held scoreless in the fourth quarter as the Blazers lost for just the third time in their last 11 games.

Portland was playing without starting guard and leading scorer Isaiah Rider, who served the first of his three-game league suspension for allegedly spitting on a fan during Thursday's win at Detroit.

"If we executed, we were in a position to win this game," Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "The guys who were here tonight and the coaching staff were the ones who lost this game."

The Nets led 63-52 after Cassell's running jumper with 3:52 to go in the third quarter, but Portland finished the frame with a 12-4 run. Augmon and Sabonis scored four points apiece on that spurt, pulling the Blazers within 67-64.

A three-pointer by Sabonis and a 22-foot jumper by Anderson gave the Blazers a 74-71 lead with 7:56 to play. But Gatling's layup just over 2 1/2 minutes later put the Nets back on top, 77-75.

Cassell tied a career high with five steals and Kendall Gill made five of his own. The Nets made 16 steals and forced 25 turnovers, which led to 32 points.

"Tonight we came back here collectively as a group," Cassell said. "I don't like having to go score 28 points a night, I like to sit back. I'm a fan, too."

Anderson committed seven turnovers and was 2-of-6 from three-point range, but Portland connected on just 3-of-16 from behind the arc.

"We lost the game, we buried ourselves with turnovers," Anderson said. "We're a team on the rise. We don't like losing but somebody has to lose. There are 70 more games to go, it's a long season."

Kerry Kittles scored seven of his 13 points in the opening period, helping the Nets to a 23-19 edge.

Sabonis, who tied a career high with five blocks, fed Augmon for a fast-break dunk to pull Portland within 29-28 with 4:46 left in the second quarter. But Gatling sank a free throw and converted a three-point play, Gill sank 1-of-2 from the foul line and Williams hit a dunk to increase the lead to 36-28.

Gatling scored seven points in the second quarter and his driving layup with four-tenths of a second left gave New Jersey a 45-34 halftime lead.
