GAME RECAP

Kevin Willis collected season highs of 22 points and 19 rebounds to help the Houston Rockets overcome a sluggish shooting performance in a 90-84 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

The Rockets shot just 38 percent from the floor and received nine points on 4-of-14 shooting from center Hakeem Olajuwon. But Willis, starting in place of the injured Charles Barkley, had four points in an 11-4 burst early in the fourth quarter, helping Houston improve to 14-3 in his last 17 starts.

"Kevin came through with a fantastic performance," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "His 19 rebounds might be his best with us and we needed every one of them. That's what we expected when we signed him. He came in in great shape and was ready to go and he's having a great year."

"(The 19 rebounds) takes me back a little bit to my Atlanta days," Willis said. "I think I had a stretch of 10 games with them when I had 18 boards a game. The points come, but rebounds, you gotta go out and get them."

Clyde Drexler scored 17 points and Matt Bullard matched his season high with 12 for the Rockets, who have won three straight games and defeated the Warriors for the sixth straight time and 17th in the last 19 meetings.

Latrell Sprewell scored 28 points and Bimbo Coles added 15 for the Warriors, who have won just once in their last 10 trips to Houston. Golden State (1-10) was coming off its first win of the season at Dallas on Thursday.

Houston brought a four-point lead into the fourth quarter before getting a spark from Willis and the bench. Rodrick Rhodes opened the period with a layup, and after a free throw by Sprewell, Bullard buried his fourth three-pointer of the game for a 67-59 lead with 10:50 to play.

Two free throws by Willis pushed the lead to 10 points. After Tony Delk's bucket, Willis made a layup for a 71-61 advantage with 9:02 left. Joe Smith made one free throw before Olajuwon capped the burst with a dunk for a 73-62 lead with 8:20 to go.

The Warriors only got as close as 75-69 on a basket by Coles with 5:10 remaining. But Brent Price drilled a three-pointer to extend the lead to nine points with 4:24 to play and Golden State got no closer than six again. Houston's bench outscored Golden State's, 30-11.

The game was tied 25-25 after one quarter before Othella Harrington scored four points in a 13-1 run. Houston took its largest lead at 38-26 on Olajuwon's three-point play with 6:37 left in the second quarter.

The Warriors closed within 43-40 at the half and took the lead, 44-43, on Sprewell's jumper midway through the third quarter. But Mario Elie's 18-footer with 5:15 left in the period gave the Rockets the lead for good at 54-53.

"At the end of the half we were in good shape and we got some good looks in the third period," Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "But we made too many mistakes to beat a good team in their building."

Elie finished with 10 points and Price nine for the Rockets, who shot 33-of-87. Olajuwon grabbed 13 rebounds.

Donyell Marshall recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds and Erick Dampier six and 10 for the Warriors, who shot 38 percent (34-of-89) and held a 54-49 rebounding advantage.
