GAME RECAP

Charles Oakley scored 11 of his season-high 18 points in the pivotal third quarter and the New York Knicks shook off an injury to Larry Johnson and cruised to another 20-point win, 104-84 over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Patrick Ewing scored 19 points to move past Larry Bird into 17th place on the list of all-time leading scorers. Allan Houston added 14 points for the Knicks, who had five players in double figures and won for the sixth time in seven games.

"Larry who? Actually, Larry is a very good friend of mine but the points really don't matter," Ewing said. "I'm just trying to get that ring. Give me a couple of those rings he has and then ask me about the points."

New York's last five wins all have been by at least 20 points. The Knicks have seven wins of 20-plus points this season after managing just four all of last season.

Oakley was ejected early in the fourth quarter after a shoving match with Vancouver forward Otis Thorpe. Johnson left midway through the period with a right leg injury and did not return.

"We lost tonight because they were the better basketball team," Vancouver head coach Brian Hill said. "They took the game to us in the second half, and we didn't respond very well."

Bryant Reeves scored 18 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 16 for the Grizzlies (6-8), who were trying to reach .500 at the latest point in any of their three seasons. Vancouver fell to 3-28 on the road against Eastern Conference teams.

Reeves scored just eight points in the final three quarters and Abdur-Rahim was held scoreless over the final 23 minutes.

"I don't know if it's more physical (in the second half), but they took their game up to another level, and we didn't raise ours," Abdur-Rahim said. "They're probably the most physical team we've faced so far this year."

Reserve Chris Mills scored 10 of his 13 points in the second quarter as the Knicks took a 51-48 halftime lead before using defense to take control in the third quarter.

New York opened the second half with an 8-1 burst, building a 59-49 lead on a three-pointer by Charlie Ward with 8:42 to go in the period. A three-pointer by Sam Mack 16 seconds later was Vancouver's first field goal of the quarter.

Two free throws by Thorpe, who scored 16 points, cut the deficit to 72-61 with 4:01 to play. But Oakley drilled two jumpers to trigger an 11-3 spurt. Mills had a three-point play and Mack hit another three-pointer before jumpers by Ewing and Houston pushed the lead to 83-64 with 32 seconds left in the quarter.

The Knicks opened their largest lead at 95-74 on a three-point play by Chris Dudley with 6:38 to go. Dudley finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, including eight points in the final period.

Reeves scored 10 points and Abdur-Rahim eight in the opening quarter, which ended in a 26-26 tie. Ewing scored nine points.
