GAME RECAP

Michael Jordan scored 18 of his 33 points in the second quarter to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 103-88 victory over the Sacramento Kings.

Toni Kukoc matched his season high with 18 points to go along with eight assists and six rebounds while Ron Harper scored 13 points for the Bulls, who won their second straight road game after dropping their first four away from the United Center. Chicago improved to 2-1 on its seven-game road trip.

"Toni was comfortable out on the court and I thought he operated well," Chicago coach Phil Jackson said. "It's just kind of coming together for us, we're going on a game-to-game basis."

Mitch Richmond scored 23 points and Corliss Williamson and Olden Polynice had 12 apiece for the Kings, who lost to the Bulls for the fifth straight time.

Chicago never trailed and closed the first quarter with an 11-4 spurt to take a 28-21 lead. The Bulls then blew it open in the second period, shooting 63 percent from the floor. Jordan's dunk gave the Bulls a 55-36 cushion with 3:03 to play and his two free throws with 10 seconds left in the half gave Chicago its largest lead at 61-40.

But Sacramento surged back in the third. Williamson capped a 20-8 run with a layup to bring the Kings within 69-62 midway through the period. Sacramento got as close as 73-69 when Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf buried a three-pointer with 2:38 remaining in the quarter before Chicago built the lead up to 76-70 entering the fourth.

"We got out of the blocks quick and built a 16-to-17 point lead," Jordan said. "And they came out in the first six or seven minutes of the third quarter and brought the game back to a four-point game. But we gained control going into the fourth quarter."

The Bulls opened the period with an 11-4 spurt to build an 87-74 lead on Bill Wennington's jumper. Sacramento scored six straight points to cut the deficit to 87-80 on Lawrence Funderburke's dunk with 7:23 to play, but the Bulls pulled away again. Jordan hit two free throws to increase the lead to nine points and the Bulls led by double figures for most of the remainder of game.

"They just played a better ballgame, especally down the stretch in the second half," Abdul-Rauf said. "Again, we didn't have the energy or the focus down the stretch to keep it going and they did."

Wennington finished with a season-high 11 points and Jason Caffey added nine and six rebounds for the Bulls, who shot 45 percent (37-of-82) from the field and reached the 100-point mark for just the third time this season. Dennis Rodman grabbed 14 rebounds.

Funderburke netted 10 points and Michael Stewart contributed six and 10 rebounds for the Kings, who shot 42 percent (35-of-83).
