GAME RECAP

Rasheed Wallace tipped in Kenny Anderson's missed driving layup at the buzzer, giving the Portland Trail Blazers a controversial 91-90 victory over the Toronto Raptors, who lost their 10th straight game in bizarre fashion.

Toronto's Popeye Jones missed a layup as the shot clock expired with about 3.5 seconds to go and Anderson came out of the pack. He dribbled quickly into the frontcourt and to the basket, but his layup missed. Wallace followed and tipped it in just before the horn sounded.

"I think everybody thought I was fouled, but that's the way it goes when you're down. No breaks," Jones said. "I heard the buzzer go off and I was relaxed. I definitely got fouled, I was waiting for the call."

However, television replays showed the clock operator stopped the game clock when he heard the shot-clock buzzer. The game clock was halted for about 1 1/2 seconds before being re-started and Wallace's winning shot came after time should have expired.

"Popeye had the ball and then the ball popped out," Wallace said. "I heard the buzzer go off and then saw that Kenny had it going up the court. (Doug) Christie made a good block on Kenny and I just followed it with the tip."

"I heard the buzzer, but I just took the ball and ran up the court," Anderson said. "I saw Doug by my side, but I tried to drive by him and lay it in. He got a piece of it, but luckily, Rasheed was there. We stole this one."

Wallace scored 16 points for the Trail Blazers, who had all five starters in double figures and improved to 2-2 on a five-game road trip. Portland is 1-1 without starting guard Isaiah Rider, who was suspended three games for spitting on a fan.

Damon Stoudamire scored a season-high 29 points with 11 assists for the Raptors, who also had all five starters in double figures but saw their franchise-record losing streak extended. Toronto was without injured starting forwards Marcus Camby and Walt Williams.

"They were short guys tonight, but so were we," Anderson said. "Damon had a great game. When they had the ball during their last possession, I knew we were going to get the ball back and I was ready."

The fourth quarter featured six ties and seven lead changes. An 18-footer by Jones gave Toronto a 90-87 lead with 39 seconds to play, but a tip-in by Brian Grant pulled Portland within a point 11 seconds later.

A baseline jumper by John Wallace, who scored 16 points, gave the Raptors an 87-85 lead with 3:44 remaining. Rasheed Wallace answered with a foul-line jumper with two minutes to go, but Wallace made 1-of-2 foul shots, giving Toronto an 88-87 edge with 1:14 left.

"It's a tough loss for my guys," Raptors coach Darrell Walker said. "As far as I'm concerned, we won the basketball game. They played together, they played with a lot of heart. Everybody played well. As long as we keep working, we have a chance. They know that I'm in the trenches with them, that's the bottom line."

Grant scored 15 points, Gary Trent added 14 off the bench and Arvydas Sabonis had 12, 16 rebounds and eight assists for the Blazers, who shot 44 percent (37-of-84) from the field and held a 42-32 rebounding advantage.

"We had a lot of easy looks, but we missed a lot of easy baskets," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "I think Sabonis missed more easy ones tonight than he has all season. But it's great to get a win on a night like that. We've gotta take advantage of our opportunities."

Wallace scored 20 points and Doug Christie 15 for Toronto, which shot 54 percent (37-of-69) but missed 10-of-25 foul shots. Jones had 10 points and seven rebounds.

"We played hard for 47 minutes and 57 seconds," Stoudamire said. "We just couldn't pull it off tonight. We had a couple of opportunities at the end, but just couldn't finish it."

Sabonis and Anderson scored seven points apiece as Portland took a 23-22 lead after one quarter. Stoudamire scored 11 points in the second quarter, helping Toronto take a 47-43 halftime lead.

Grant and Stacey Augmon scored six points each in the third period as the Blazers closed to 73-70 entering the final 12 minutes.
