GAME RECAP

Glen Rice scored 13 of his 21 points in the first quarter and added two baskets late in the fourth quarter to help hold off a rally and give the Charlotte Hornets their fifth straight win, 90-85 over the slumping Detroit Pistons.

Matt Geiger scored 17 points and Anthony Mason pulled down 15 rebounds for Charlotte (9-3), which is off to the best start in franchise history. The Hornets have won nine of their last 10 games.

Charlotte's sellout streak at the 24,042-seat Coliseum was snapped at 364 games with a crowd of 22,617. It began on December 23rd, 1988 and was the second-longest streak behind Chicago's 465 games.

"Tonight's game goes to show that all games are not artistic events," said Charlotte coach Dave Cowens. "Tonight was a tough division game for us. Our offense was sputtering and we missed a lot of layups and free throws. It does show, however, how strong our defense is.

"We have a long way to go to reach our potential, but they're giving me 100 percent and are a real good bunch to coach. I think we are one of the better teams in the league as our record shows."

Brian Williams had 27 points and 10 rebounds and Grant Hill added 19 points for Detroit, which lost its fourth straight road game and dropped five games under .500 (5-10).

"Charlotte has done a tremendous job of building their team. They should be proud," said Detroit coach Doug Collins. "Glen Rice is a tremendous shooter. In the first quarter he got off, then I thought we controlled him until the very end. He made two great plays."

A three-point play by Geiger gave Charlotte a 79-67 lead with 6:55 remaining, but Detroit answered with a 14-4 run over the next 5:11, cutting the deficit to 83-81 on a dunk by Williams, who had five points during the spurt.

But that was the closest the Pistons would get as Rice hit a jumper and a shot in the lane over Williams to give Charlotte an 87-81 lead with 54 seconds to go.

"I knew I had to step up at crunch time and make buckets," said Rice. "I have to keep stepping up. We are in a groove right now and we have to keep the momentum going.

"It makes it easier when Mason is involved with the boards, especially when the Eastern Conference teams are so competitive."

Joe Dumars missed two three-pointers and Lindsey Hunter in the final minute for Detroit, which shot just 2-of-15 from behind the arc. Charlotte was 6-of-12, with Bobby Phills hitting all three of his attempts, finishing with 15 points.

Detroit jumped to an early 7-3 lead, but Charlotte went on an 18-5 run to take the lead for good. Rice, who had a three-pointer, four juumpers and a layup during the burst, sank a jump shot with 56 seconds remaining in the first quarter to give the Hornets a 21-12 lead.

"Glen Rice stepped up and hit two great shots for them in the last minute," said Williams. "It seems like the same scenario but a different day for us. I am busting my tail to work and perform as hard as I can for this team. I hope things will change for the best."
