GAME RECAP

David Robinson had 22 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks and Jaren Jackson had two big baskets down the stretch as the San Antonio Spurs nearly blew a 26-point lead before handing the Dallas Mavericks their 10th straight loss, 102-91.

The Mavericks, who opened the season 3-0, moved halfway towards matching their longest losing streak in team history. It is their 11th double-digit losing streak since 1991.

San Antonio took a 70-44 lead on Tim Duncan's layup 2:55 into the third quarter, but the Mavericks battled back.

"We let down our guard, we just broke down," said Duncan. "I don't know if we were looking towards the next game or just not playing the same defense the whole game. They got the momentum, they hit some shots, they fought back into it."

Michael Finley had five points in a 10-0 run that narrowed the deficit to 83-75 after three quarters and Erick Strickland took over to start the fourth period. Strickland hit a 12-footer, stole the ball on the Spurs' ensuing possession, then hit a three-pointer to make it 83-80 just 1:40 into the quarter.

But Jackson came off the bench with a three-point play to boost the lead to six points. After Samaki Walker's basket pulled the Mavericks to within 86-82, Jackson hit a 10-footer to again make it a six-point game.

The Spurs shot 55 percent (41-of-75) from the field and held a 45-34 advantage in rebounds to win their fourth straight from the Mavericks.

Trailing 80-61 with under four minutes left in the third quarter, the Mavericks began their comeback on Dennis Scott's 17-footer. Duncan, who had 11 points and 10 rebounds, hit 1-of-2 from the line, but Walker and Shawn Bradley made lay-ins to narrow the deficit to 81-67.

Elliot sank a basket with 1:44 to go, but Strickland -- who scored 13 off the bench -- swung the momentum Dallas' way with a three-pointer. Finley scored five straight points on a three-point play and a pair of free throws to end the period.

Elliot had 19 points and Cory Alexander added 17 for San Antonio. Jackson had nine points to lead a balanced 27-point effort from the bench.

Alexander scored 10 of his points as the Spurs shot a blazing 83 percent (19-of-23) and outscored Dallas 40-17 in the first quarter. After Alexander missed a shot 2:41 into the game, San Antonio hit a remarkable 16 straight from the field to close out the quarter.

"We had a great start," Spurs coach Greg Popovich said. "We got them in a hole. They deserve a lot of credit, they played really hard. Coaches worry more when they're up 20 than when it's a close game."

"We need to get off to better starts," observed Dallas coach Jim Cleamons. "We do not have the ability to come back on a team after giving them a big lead to start with."

Dallas was able to get as close as three points once more in the fourth quarter. Robinson gave the Spurs a 90-84 edge with a jumper midway through the period, but Finley, who finished with 20 points, drained a 12-footer and a three-pointer in quick succession to make it 90-87 with just over six minutes left.

Chuck Person, who sank 3-of-6 shots in 25 minutes off the bench, countered from behind the arc and Robinson added a jumper to end the Mavs' final threat.

"Those guys have got a lot of pride," said Spurs guard Avery Johnson, who had nine assists. "I saw that in them tonight. They're going through some tough times but nobody out there quit."

Scott, who has been asking for more playing time, hit 7-of-12 shots for 15 points in a season-high 43 minutes. Bradley had 16, 10 rebounds and six blocks for Dallas, which had nine blocks overall. It is the sixth time this season that Bradley has had five or more blocks.
