GAME RECAP

The Los Angeles Lakers lost for the first time in 12 games this season, falling 103-86 to former coach Pat Riley and the Miami Heat, who got 22 points, eight rebounds and seven assists from Tim Hardaway.

The Lakers fell to 11-1 after getting off to the best start in franchise history. They became the last team to lose this season partly because superstar center Shaquille O'Neal was out of the lineup with an abdominal strain.

Riley coached the Lakers from 1981 to 1990, winning four NBA titles. But never did his talented team win its first 11 games.

Hardaway keyed a 28-8 run over the third and fourth quarters. Voshon Lenard and Hardaway connected on back-to-back three-pointers to end the third quarter, giving Miami a 74-66 lead. Hardaway converted a three-point play and hit a jumper before Isaac Austin, who had 19 points and nine rebounds, drained a hook shot for a 90-72 cushion with 6:09 to play.

"It wasn't an emotional win, it was just a good win," Hardaway said. "Emotional is when you win the seventh game of an NBA Final. This is just a good win and we have to go back tomorrow."

Nick Van Exel scored 21 points and Elden Campbell added 17 and seven rebounds for the Lakers, who were held to their lowest total of the season and 25 below their league-leading average.

"They did a pretty good job defensively, that's for sure," Van Exel said. "Holding the number one team in the league in scoring to 86 points."

Jamal Mashburn contributed 22 points as the Heat earned their first victory of the season over a team with a winning record.

Eddie Jones scored just 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting but his fast-break dunk pulled the Lakers within 90-77 with five minutes to go. But Austin scored five of Miami's next eight points to increase the lead to 98-82 with 2:32 remaining. Los Angeles got no closer than 14 points thereafter.

The Lakers, who shot just 39 percent (32-of-82) from the field, were unable to top the start by the Atlanta Hawks, who also opened this season with 11 straight wins. The Hawks have since lost two straight games.

"To a point, the higher you are when you fall, the more it hurts," Lakers coach Del Harris said. "On the other hand, it is better to be 11-1 than anything less than that."

Kobe Bryant chipped in 16 points for Los Angeles but shot just 7-of-21 from the floor.

Los Angeles owned a 64-62 lead with 2:43 left in the third quarter when Mashburn scored six straight points to put Miami ahead for good. After Van Exel answered with a 13-footer, Lenard and Hardaway hit consecutive three-pointers for a 74-66 lead.

"We hit some shots today even though we started off pretty slow," Mashburn said. "And we played tough defense, especially in the second half."

Hardaway, who scored nine points in the fourth quarter, hit three three-pointers and Voshon Lenard drained four from behind the arc to finish with 12 points.

Rick Fox and Robert Horry -- the Lakers' starting forwards -- provided little help with the absence of O'Neal. Fox had two points, two rebounds and four turnovers in 27 minutes while Horry finished with eight, seven and two in 33 minutes.

Van Exel dominated the second quarter, scoring 14 points and helping the Lakers build their biggest lead. He drained back-to-back three-pointers for a 32-27 edge early in the period and later scored six straight points to make it 43-35 with 4:56 left.

But two dunks by Austin around two free throws from Mashburn pulled the Lakers within two, and Hardaway's three-pointer with 31 seconds remaining pulled Miami within 51-49 at the half.
