GAME RECAP

Jamal Mashburn scored 19 points and Isaac Austin added seven of his 15 in a huge second quarter as the Miami Heat destroyed the Orlando Magic, 84-60, in an early-season battle for first place in the Atlantic Division.

Eric Murdock contributed 14 points, including nine in an 11-0 burst in the second period. The Heat shot 63 percent from the floor in the quarter and outscored the Magic, 33-12, to build a 56-31 halftime lead.

The Heat, who handed the Los Angeles Lakers their first loss on Tuesday, posted their third straight win and moved one-half game ahead of the New York Knicks for first place. The Magic fell into third, one game behind Miami.

"We played as well in the first half tonight as we did in the second half last night against the Lakers, it sort of carried over," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "Our defense has really picked up and we are helping, we are coming early, contesting. We played about as well as we could have in that first half."

Penny Hardaway had 19 points for the Magic, who had their six-game winning streak snapped. The 60 points were just three better than the all-time franchise low, set on December 4th against Cleveland.

"Well, this is not the way you want to end a winning streak," Orlando coach Chuck Daly said. "Quite frankly, we got annihilated, we got outcoached and got outplayed in every way. They were much more aggressive than we were."

Miami led by just four points after the first quarter and 26-23 with 9:38 left in the second. But Murdock took over, making consecutive driving layups for a seven-point cushion. After an 18-footer jumper by Dan Majerle, Murdock buried a three-pointer and sank a pair of free throws for a 37-23 lead with 6:44 remaining in the period.

The Heat extended the edge to 17 before Bo Outlaw's dunk made it 44-29 with 2:56 to go in the half. But P.J. Brown had a tip-in and a dunk around two free throws by Austin to extend the margin to 50-29 with 1:42 left.

Austin made another free throw for a 22-point bulge before Tim Hardaway converted a three-point play to cap a 10-0 spurt and give Miami a 54-29 advantage with a minute remaining in the half.

Penny Hardaway scored seven points in the third quarter, but Orlando was able to trim just one point off Miami's lead entering the fourth. The Heat opened their largest lead, 32 points, on Murdock's running jumper with 6:30 remaining in the fourth quarter.

"If we play like this all season, we will go far," Tim Hardaway said. "Sometimes our games are easier than our practices. That is how we really feel. We get tired of hitting ourselves and beating up each other. We like coming in and beating up on some old folks."

Brown collected 12 points and 15 rebounds and Tim Hardaway also scored 12 points for the Heat, who shot 41 percent (33-of-81) from the field and held a 53-39 rebounding advantage.

Danny Schayes finished with eight points for the Magic, who shot 29 percent (21-of-73). Orlando failed to score 20 points in any quarter.
