GAME RECAP

Chris Webber scored 24 points and buried a crucial jumper in the final minute as the Washington Wizards snapped a six-game losing streak with a 98-94 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

Juwan Howard added 24 points and Rod Strickland had 23 and 17 assists as the Wizards defeated the Spurs for the fourth straight time. After the Spurs used a 29-14 burst to pull within a basket with 47 seconds left, Webber sank a 13-foot jumper to push the lead to 96-92.

Webber, coming off a 29-point effort on Monday, added six rebounds, eight steals and three blocked shots. The Wizards, who snapped a four-game road losing streak, made 41-of-75 shots from the field and committed just nine turnovers.

"We made some shots and that's been our problem, not making shots," said Wizards coach Bernie Bickerstaff. "Strickland is one of the premier players in the league. He is maturing and the key to maturing is staying around long enough to mature. We missed some free throws and let them back in the game. We made it hard on ourselves by not making free throws. But I'm not dissapointed we won."

David Robinson scored 34 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and rookie Tim Duncan added 18 and 14 for the Spurs, who have won just twice in their last seven games.

"I didn't go in and stop anybody tonight," Duncan said. "They shot 50 percent tonight as a team. We need to find a way to defend them to make them miss."

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was ejected just under three minutes into the second half for arguing.

"(Popovich) was standing up for us and I wasn't surprised that he got run," Avery Johnson said of his coach. "He was just trying to fire us up."

The Wizards led 80-63 with 11:08 remaining but San Antonio began chipping away. Cory Alexander, who had 12 of his 14 points in the final 11 minutes, capped the run by sinking a three-pointer with 47 seconds left. But Webber answered with his basket to push the Spurs' lead to four.

Duncan sank an 11-foot jumper with 18.4 seconds to go to again draw San Antonio within a basket. But Calbert Cheaney was fouled on the Wizards' next possession and made the first of two free throws. He missed the second, Robinson grabbed the rebound and fired down court. Alexander hoisted up a three-pointer, but the ball failed to hit the rim and Strickland came up with loose ball.

"The last shot I took, Rod Strickland got a hand on it and that's why the shot was short, but that didn't lose the game for us. We lost the game earlier in the evening," said Alexander. "They're a good basketball team."

Strickland made 1-of-2 free throws to seal the win.

"We just tried to go out and play hard," he said. "We put it together as a team."

Washington used just seven players and got just seven points in 29 minutes from its bench.
