GAME RECAP

Wesley Person matched his career high with 33 points as the Cleveland Cavaliers snapped the Charlotte Hornets' five-game game winning streak with a 97-91 victory.

Person connected on 14-of-23 shots from the field, matching a career high set last February while he was with the Phoenix Suns. Person is averaging 26 points per game over his last four games.

"Sometimes in a game, you just feel good about your shot," Person said. "Tonight, I felt like every time I shot the ball, it was going in the basket."

Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 15 points and 10 rebounds while Shawn Kemp contributed 13 and 11 for the Cavaliers, who won their fourth straight game. Derek Anderson, filling in at point guard for fellow rookie Brevin Knight, had 12 points and 14 assists. Knight missed the game with a bruised right shoulder.

"This is a younger team with not as many veterans," Kemp said. "We've had to make some adjustments on offense and defense, and I think we've done that well. Some nights Wesley carries the scoring load, some nights I carry the scoring load."

David Wesley and former Cavalier Bobby Phills led the Hornets with 17 points apiece. Glen Rice, who leads the Hornets in scoring this season, was held to 14 points on 3-of-11 shooting. All four of Charlotte's losses have come when Rice does not lead the team in scoring.

The Cavaliers trailed 59-53 midway through the third quarter before going on a 15-4 run to take the lead for good. Person, who had six points in the burst, capped the burst with a dunk with 2:04 left in the period for a 68-63 lead.

Cleveland extended its lead to 89-80 with three minutes to go before Anthony Mason scored six consecutive points to draw Charlotte within 89-86 with 1:34 to play. Mason finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

But Person provided the dagger, draining a 30-footer as the shot clock expired for a 92-86 lead with 63 seconds left. Anderson connected on a jumper with 34 seconds remaining to extend the lead to 94-86.

"We made a couple shots down the stretch that we had some good fortune in," Cleveland coach Mike Fratello said. "Wesley Person was a huge factor and stepped up tonight along with Shawn Kemp."

The Hornets held a 10-4 lead in the first quarter, but the Cavs scored 18 of the next 20 points to take a 22-12 lead. They extended the lead to 30-19 after the first quarter behind 10 points from Person.

Cleveland still held a 43-31 advantage with 4:30 remaining in the first half, but Charlotte used an 18-5 run to end the half for a 49-48 halftime lead.

Cleveland shot 51 percent (41-for-81) from the field, while holding Charlotte to 45 percent (33-of-73). The Hornets also committed 23 turnovers.

"We were just too careless with the ball tonight," Charlotte coach Dave Cowens said. "When you have 23 turnovers and 23 assists it is very difficult to win in that situation. We didn't have a very good shooting night. They defend the post well and make you shoot outside, which was tough for us."
