GAME RECAP

Eddie Johnson scored nine of his season-high 21 points in a decisive fourth-quarter run and Charles Barkley grabbed 13 rebounds in his return as the Houston Rockets won their fourth straight game, 98-89 over the Portland Trail Blazers.

Clyde Drexler had 24 points as Houston played its first of many games without center Hakeem Olajuwon, who is expected to be sidelined until the All-Star break after undergoing knee surgery on Monday.

Houston owned an 81-80 lead when Johnson scored nine straight points to spark a 13-3 run. Drexler's two free throws capped the spurt, building a 94-83 lead with 2:52 to play. Portland, which had won the last three games of this series, got no closer than seven thereafter.

"Teams are going to take us lightly because we don't have Dream (Olajuwon), but we have a lot of talent, one through 12," said Johnson. "Clyde was having a great game, and you've got to respect Charles. So I am going to be the beneficiary of the good looks."

Barkley contributed seven points and three steals in 39 minutes after missing the last three games with a groin strain.

"We've got great confidence in everyone on our team," Barkley said. "Tonight was a good win, but we've played better. ... If people don't believe we can win, I don't want them around here. We still feel very confident."

Isaiah Rider scored 20 points for Portland, which committed 22 turnovers and had its two-game winning streak snapped.

Houston owned a 47-46 halftime edge when Drexler scored the first 10 Rockets' points of the third quarter. His jumper gave Houston a 57-52 lead, but Portland answered with the next seven points.

Rasheed Wallace, who scored 10 points, drained a long jumper to put the Blazers in front, 59-57. The game was back-and-forth from there until Johnson heated up in the fourth quarter.

The 38-year-old Johnson hit two straight jumpers before Portland's Gary Trent converted a three-point play to make it 85-83. Johnson sank three free throws after getting fouled on a three-pointer, and then drained one from behind the arc to increase the lead to 90-83 with 4:35 to go.

"At the end of the game, they got on a roll and we couldn't answer," Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Eddie Johnson is pretty amazing, he can really stroke it."

Kevin Willis continued the run with a pair of free throws and finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. He had been starting at forward in place of Barkley and started at center for this contest to replace Olajuwon.

"We really needed his rebounding and inside presence. It really worked out for us tonight," Drexler said.

Portland connected on just 2-of-16 three-pointers, including an 0-of-6 performance by Kenny Anderson, who was suffering from a thigh bruise. Anderson shot 1-of-9 from the field, committed three turnovers and finished with two points and four assists.

"Yeah, I hurt the team. I'm not 100 percent," Anderson said. "(It) hurts more than I thought it would, just play through it, that's all."

Brian Grant had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Arvydas Sabonis added 10 and 13 for Portland, which outrebounded Houston, 45-39. The Blazers shot 46 percent (32-of-70) from the field and held the Rockets to 42 percent (35-of-84) but forced just 10 turnovers.

"We didn't shoot great, we didn't rebound great, but we took care of the ball," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We forced 22 turnovers, and that was the difference."

The Blazers got a lift from their bench, which shot 13-of-20 from the field. Trent had 14 points and eight rebounds and rookie center Kelvin Cato was 4-of-4 from the floor for 10 points in just eight minutes.
