GAME RECAP

Cliff Robinson scored 26 points and Rex Chapman drained four three-pointers and finished with 24 as the Phoenix Suns gave Danny Ainge his first coaching win in Boston with a 112-108 overtime victory over the Celtics.

Ainge, who won two championships in seven-plus years as a player with the Celtics, improved to 1-1 in Boston with the Suns' third straight win.

"We had some silly turnovers, which we shouldn't have with the skills all our guards have," said Chapman. "We were lucky to get out of here with a win."

Jason Kidd hit a runner and rookie Antonio McDyess sank three free throws in the first 1 1/2 minutes of overtime as Phoenix charged out to a 105-100 lead. But Boston's Dana Barros, who had 17 points and season highs with nine assists and seven rebounds, nailed a three-pointer to cut the deficit to two points.

With 3:05 left, Chapman hit his final three-pointer to give Phoenix some breathing room. The Celtics narrowed the gap to 108-106 when Antoine Walker connected from behind the arc, but Robinson sank 1-of-2 from the line and Chapman dropped in a deep jumper to seal the victory.

Robinson shot 11-of-15 from the field and Chapman connected on 9-of-15 as Phoenix shot 51 percent (44-of-86) and held a 48-40 rebounding edge.

Danny Manning scored 14 points and George McCloud 13 for the Suns (9-2), who have won seven of their last eight and are off to their best start since also opening 9-2 in the 1982-83 season.

Walker finished with 27 points while rookie Ron Mercer converted 12-of-21 shots for a career-high 26 points and McCarty chipped in with 13 off the bench for the Celtics, who shot 40 percent (45-of-92).

"I think the leprechauns might be coming back for the Celtics," joked Ainge. "They're tough on defense, they have a great system, and they're going to do nothing but improve. It was good to come out of here with a win."

McCarty gave Boston its final lead early in the third quarter, hitting a three-pointer for a 54-53 edge. Manning scored four quick points and Chapman hit a three-pointer as Phoenix built a 60-54 edge.

The Celtics pulled within 60-58 on Mercer's basket before the Suns pulled away to their biggest lead with a 6-0 spurt. Kidd's bucket with just under six minutes to go in the period made it 66-58.

"Turnovers killed us. They capitalized on turnovers," said Kidd, who had 10 assists but gave away the ball four times. "The Kentucky boys -- Walker and Mercer -- had big games."

The Celtics turned Phoenix's 19 turnovers into 17 points.

Trailing by seven in the final quarter, Boston closed to 92-90 with 4:57 to play when Walker dunked and sank a three-pointer in a 27-second span.

Kidd doubled the lead with a basket and Chapman pumped in a three-pointer for a 96-90 advantage with 4:04 to go, but Walker nailed another three-pointer to halve the deficit 11 seconds later. Chapman and Mercer traded baskets, setting up the final 1 1/2 minutes of regulation.

The Celtics trailed 100-95 until Barros penetrated and dished to Walker, who hit the layup while being fouled. Walker hit the free throw and Kevin Johnson, who had a quiet game with three points and five assists, dribbled the ball upcourt and threw it away under the basket. On the ensuing possession, Barros sliced through the lane and tied it with 1:08 to go.

"You have to give Boston a lot of credit," Kidd said. "They're the youngest team in the league and they're an improving team."
